What comes to mind when
you think of social media?
Social Media + Learning ≠
Social Media + Learning ≠
Although …
Why active learning?
Content acquisition is not the same thing as learning
Pedagogical theories and models all support the necessity of
practice and feedback
What is Engagement?

Types of Learning

Why social media?
Think about everything that lies beyond our classrooms
Humans
Information
Tools
Shift Into the Social
Media Mindset
Think beyond the class boundaries.
Promote interaction and production (not just consumption).
Networked
Knowledge Activities
This is how the active learning takes place!

Collect.
Example: Collect Activity
Scavenger Hunt
š Students receive a list of items to find online and save (or share) to a
communal location. Can add in a rating/scoring component.
Pairs nicely with:
š Curate, Share, and Negotiate
Benefits:
š Instructor opportunity to see the resources students are trying to use.
š Tacit objectives:
š Locate online resources on specific topical areas.
š Evaluate online resources.
Curate.

Example: Curate Activity
Class Knowledge Base
š Small groups of students are assigned topical areas to investigate
online. They curate a “best of” resource for the class with annotations.
Pairs nicely with:
š Collect and Share
Benefits:
š Reflective engagement with learning objects
š Tacit objective
š Evaluate online resources.
š Build knowledge base.
Share.
Example: Share Activity
Knowledge sharing & tracking
š Students use social media networks to share information or knowledge
objects, then collect analytics to see what reaction their shared items
received.
Pairs nicely with:
š Curate & Create
Benefits:
š Dissemination of renewable assessments
š Tacit objectives
š Effectively share information online.
š Collect, analyze and report analytic data.
Broker.
Example: Broker Activity
Professional Learning Network Development
š Students seek out, join, and interact within a course-related social media
network and report back to the class.
š Potential to share items created within the class with a network, too!
Pairs nicely with:
š Curate & Create
Benefits:
š Authenticity
š Possible dissemination of renewable assessments
š Tacit objectives
š Identify professional development opportunities.
š Build knowledge base.
Negotiate.
Example: Negotiate Activity
Problem solvers
š Students locate online problems/cases in their field of study and share
with the class. Small groups work together to find online resources that
help solve the problem. Expert/professional guidance may be sought
to evaluate solutions.
Pairs nicely with:
š Collect and curate.
Benefits:
š Authenticity
š Tacit objective
š Learn to use a new tool and/or to use a familiar tool differently.
Create.
Example: Create Activity
Public Service Announcement / Public Education
š Students create a resource that meets a specific public information or
education need, and then disseminate it to that audience
Pairs nicely with:
š Share and Broker
Benefits:
š Create renewable assessments
š Tacit objectives
š Build professional networks.
š Learn to use a new tool and/or to use a familiar tool differently.
The tools … are just tools
(a non-exhaustive collection)
In sum …
Learning is about doing something with knowledge.
These are knowledge skills that EVERYONE needs.
