As the name implies, the main function of an IDS is to identify and stop intrusions into your IT infrastructure, then notify the appropriate parties. • A computer network's traffic is monitored by an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) to look for any unusual activities. • The network's data is analysed to seek for trends and indications of unusual behavior. • The IDS compares the network activity to a set of predefined rules and patterns to identify any activity that might indicate an attack or intrusion. • The system administrator receives a notification if the IDS finds something that corresponds to one of these rules or patterns. • After looking into the alert, the system administrator can take appropriate measures to stop any harm or additional infiltration.
