The Atomic Bomb
Summary of Effects
The atomic bombs that were dropped were the first kind of
nuclear weapons that the world had seen. All nuclear
weapons get their destructive power from nuclear
reactions of fusion, or fission.
Nuclear reactions of fusion happen when two nuclear
particles collide with each other to create products that
are different from the orignal particles.
Fission occurs when the nucleus of an atom is split. When
this happens, gamma rays are emitted. If fission occurs,
high amounts of energy in the form of radiation are
released.
What is the Atomic Bomb Made
From?
Who Created the Atomic Bomb
and When was it Created?
 Named the Manhattan Project
 The leader of the Manhattan Project was
U.S. Army Brigadier General Leslie R.
Groves; His team worked under the
direction of American physicist J. Robert
Oppenheimer
 Development of the atomic bomb began in
1942
When was the First Bomb
Dropped?
 The first atomic explosion was conducted, as
a test, at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July
16, 1945
 August 6, 1945 the US drops first atomic
bomb on Hiroshima, Japan ("Little Boy")
 August 9, US drops second atomic bomb on
the city of Nagasaki ("Fat Man")
Summary of Effects
The atomic bomb, called
Little Boy, was dropped on
Hiroshima on August 6th,
1945. More than half of the
buildings were destroyed
in the city. It is estimated
that about 70,000 people
were killed instantly. Also,
by 1946, 90,000-140,000
had died due to injuries
and radiation. Destruction caused by the atomic bomb
Pictures from Event/Effects
This picture shows the damage
and injuries that were suffered by
many as a result of the atomic
bombs. The energy that was
released from the bomb caused
severe burns and scarring.

Quotation From an Expert
We knew the world would not be the same. A few
people laughed, a few people cried, most people
were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu
scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to
persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and
to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and
says, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of
worlds." I suppose we all thought that, one way or
another.
-J. Robert Oppenheimer
A response from Oppenheimer, mastermind behind the atomic
bomb, after being interviewed about his creations.

Why was the Atomic Bomb
Dropped?
 To save Americans soldiers lives
 Options were to invade Japan or drop
atomic bombs
Invasion of Japan had casualty
numbers of 500,000 to 1 million
soldiers killed/wounded
 Fierce house-to-house combat
Atomic bomb losses projected at
American aircrew
 Decision made by President Harry S.
Truman
Negative side to to the Atomic
Bomb (people’s opinions)
 People thought the bomb was not dropped
on European enemies but on people of a
nonwhite race
 “ A few scholars, notably Gar Alperovitz,
have further charged that the atomic
holocaust at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was
not the final shot of World War II but the first
salvo in the cold war.”
Who Delivered the Atomic Bomb?
 The USS Indianapolis
 Delivered parts of “Little Boy” on July 30,
1945 in a Top Secret mission
Dropped 2 weeks later
 Torpedoed by Japanese submarine
300 killed on impact
900 sailors went into the Pacific for over
5 days
321 survived to be rescued
4 later died in the hospital
