Join FSC Circularity Hub and global circularity leaders on 4 September to explore how the circular bioeconomy is transforming wood-based industries! FSC Circularity Hub webinar: Natural resources in a volatile World When: 4 September, 15.30 – 17:00 (CEST) Where: https://lnkd.in/dYDz7Ukp This isn’t about theory — it’s about real-world transformation. This session will unpack actionable strategies for rethinking production, consumption, and material flows. From cascading use models to scalable material innovations, our panellists will share practical examples of how circular principles are being applied across sectors, and why they believe keeping natural resources in circulation and reducing reliance on virgin inputs is becoming a baseline for future-proof operations. As global demand for forest products grow, we need to ask harder questions about how those materials are sourced and whose voices are heard in the process. Mighty Earth's investigation shows how the complexity of global supply chains leaves final consumers unaware that their purchases might include products of massive deforestation and biodiversity loss. This also shows why responsible sourcing by manufacturers is essential. Preventing deforestation and protecting the rights of forest-dependent peoples takes consistent efforts by many. My thanks Mighty Earth, Amanda Hurowitz, Sui-Lee Wee and others for this investigation.
It’s out! After 20 months of hard work, The New York Times has published our story detailing who was behind the largest example of deforestation in Indonesia. Crazily, we found that American recreational vehicle companies were one of the main culprits. They’ve been buying meranti wood from a company that has cleared almost 100,000 acres of forest, including orangutan habitat and Indigenous Dayak territory to make the interior walls of the RVs. One insider called an RV “a meranti box on wheels” with the thin sheets of plywood making up the sidewalls and also used to make cabinets and other furnishings. We hope these articles show that the world cares about the fate of Southeast Asia’s paradise forests. It's been a long road to see these articles in print. In November 2024, I travelled with NYT Bureau Chief Sui-Lee Wee and her colleagues Muktita Suhartono and Ulet Ifansasti to Borneo to investigate a shadowy company, Alas Kusuma that had cleared more forest than the rest of the top 10 Indonesia deforesters combined. We were joined by amazing teams from Indonesian organizations Satya Bumi Foundation and Link-AR Borneo. What we saw: Although the company had cleared much forest, there were still tens of thousands of acres of deep carbon rich forest peatlands filled with critically endangered orangutans, sun bears, white bearded gibbons and helmeted hornbills. Orangutans were appearing more frequently in community gardens, a sign they were evicted from their homes. We heard from residents that the company had pitted communities against each other, encouraged the burning of their houses, destroyed rubber fields and sacred locations and used their influence to jail residents who protested. On a personal note, it was amazing to travel through the communities of West Kalimantan, hear their stories, and enjoy the deliciously spicy Dayak sambal. I’m especially grateful to Pak Samsidar who expertly guided us through the rivers and deep peat in the southern part of the concession and Pak Andreas Ratius, Pak Fendi, Ibu Maria Adoh and others from the community of Sabar Bubu and the villagers of Leylang Hamlet that traveled to tell their stories to the Times reporters. Our task now is to make sure the remaining forests stay protected, and what was lost is restored. The Indonesian government had halted the deforestation, but is now facing pressure to let the bulldozers back in. We’re reaching out to American RV owners who love using their vehicles to visit our country’s natural wonders to ask manufacturers to only use Forest Stewardship Council certified wood, and otherwise make sure that their RVs aren’t killing orangutans or other endangered wildlife. In the addition to the above, thank you to Auriga Nusantara, Earthsight, and Profundo for their research and other contributions! Did you know that one of Mexico’s most impactful ecosystem service projects, focused on watershed protection and recreational development, is led by a local community? This homegrown initiative is more than just a local effort; it's a model of sustainable development with tangible benefits. Swipe through the carousel to learn more. Projects like this need funds to continue taking care of ecosystem services. Verified Impact, our solution for certifying ecosystem services, helps bring projects to businesses looking to invest. Here's how it works: 1️⃣ Forest managers make a positive impact and get impact data via the FSC System. 2️⃣ Forest managers and businesses connect (we can support your matchmaking efforts). 3️⃣ By investing in the project, businesses gain data-driven proof of the environmental benefits generated by their support. FSC Mexico awards the world's first FSC certificates for candelilla wax from the shrubland ecosystems! The award ceremony at Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro (UAAAN) highlighted the commitment of the ejido communities of Coahuila to traceability, good production practices, and the conservation of shrubland ecosystems. Local, state, federal, and international authorities attended the event, along with Marion Barriskell, Chief Operating Officer of FSC International, the Director of Research at UAAAN, representatives from FSC Mexico, Reforestamos México A.C., the National Union of Community Forestry Organizations A.C. (UNOFOC), and many more.
