As climate change continues to shape our future, the focus on adaptation strategies has become more critical 🌍 Recent Murray–Darling Water and Environment Research Program projects are providing valuable insights into how we can assess, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, not only on the environment but also on socio-economic outcomes. This work ensures we can keep testing and refining management options, helping us make informed, future-ready decisions for our rivers and communities 🏞️ 💡 It’s all about staying one step ahead, for the Basin and beyond. A few times a year, our Chief Executive and Chair travel to different areas of the Basin to meet with local communities and understand more about their specific experiences and challenges. Right now, our CE Andrew McConville and Chair Daryl Quinlivan are travelling through the mid-Murray region. Yesterday, they visited the Hume Dam and Yarrawonga Weir, to hear more about the critical combination of infrastructure and collaboration required to run the river. The group will travel from #Albury > # Yarrawonga > #Mulwala > #BarmahMillewa > #Moama > #Echuca > # Deniliquin > #WeraiForest 🎬Check out the wrap from day 1 of the mid-Murray tour Goulburn-Murray Water WaterNSW #BasinPlanReview #MidMurray #HumeDam #YarrawongaWeir #waterstorages #riveroperations #watermanagement #rivercommunities #sharingknowledge #connectiontocountry #mdbaoutandabout #riversforgenerations

We’re giving native fish a fighting chance in the Murray–Darling Basin. When unregulated rivers flood, native fish eggs and larvae naturally flow into wetlands. This provides a safe and warm place for juvenile fish to develop. The next time the river floods, the native fish that have matured in the wetlands are returned to the waterways to continue their lifecycle. This process has been negatively impacted by water regulation and dams. We’re now placing hundreds of thousands of juvenile silver and golden perch in wetlands flooded with environmental water. This provides larvae and fingerlings the best chance to grow and thrive before being translocated back into the river system. This project is being delivered in partnership with Victorian Fisheries Authority, First Nations communities, Trust for Nature, Victorian Environmental Water Holder, Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) and North Central Catchment Management Authority. Watch this space for an update on the project outcomes later this year! #Fish #Wetlands #Conservation #MurrayDarling #EnvironmentalScience #WaterForTheEnvironment #WaterManagement #MurrayDarlingBasin #Sustainability #Innovation #InnovationInScience

🛣️ In the 1800s, before extensive roads and railways, Australia's rivers were the highways of the inland. European explorers and settlers relied on hand-drawn river scrolls to navigate these winding waterways. These cloth maps were more than just navigational tools—they were detailed chronicles of the river's course, landmarks, and potential dangers. Thanks to the support of a community member, we’ve recently digitised a historical 1880s paddle steamer navigation scroll of the Darling (Baaka) River. This scroll charts the journey from Bourke to Wilcannia and measures a staggering 79.85 meters long! The digitisation process unlocks new possibilities for understanding the river's past and present. The digitised scrolls can be cross-referenced with modern satellite imagery, revealing how the Darling (Baaka) River has transformed over centuries due to natural processes and human interventions. This project is providing local cultural, historical and environmental knowledge about the Darling (Baaka) River. 🔗 Read the whole story: https://lnkd.in/g7GnYDwR #History #Innovation #RiverNavigation #Australia #CulturalHeritage

🦎 Do you know what wild and wonderful creatures are living in your local waterway? The 2024 Great Australian Wildlife Search used cutting-edge environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring to detect the presence of wildlife in the Murray–Darlin Basin. Hundreds of citizen scientists ventured out to local waterways to collect samples. The samples detected 144 species - 18 of which are considered threatened. This includes the vulnerable Southern Bell Frog (Litoria raniformis) 🐸 📍 Are any of them near you? Use our new interactive map to explore your valley’s environmental results from the 2025 Sustainable Rivers Audit. Rivers are intricate ecological networks, far more than just a pathway for water. A healthy river ecosystem is defined by its ability to sustain key processes. This includes: ✅carbon exchange ✅ nutrient cycling ✅ energy transfer ✅ sediment transport. To measure and report on river conditions and trends in the Murray–Darling Basin, the 2025 Sustainable Rivers Audit uses a set of environmental indicators and values. These indicators and values are assessed across the 23 major valleys in the Basin. 🔗 Find your valley’s environmental results: https://lnkd.in/gNsvfcFK #SustainableRiversAudit2025 #HealthyRivers #MurrayDarlingBasin #EnvironmentalAwareness #InteractiveMap #RiverHealth
