  • 💬 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 For years, the moral case for sustainability — that business has a duty to do the right thing — has run alongside the business case: the risks avoided and opportunities gained by integrating sustainability into core strategy. From brand resilience to operational efficiency, from supply chain stability to attracting and retaining talent, the evidence is clear: companies that act early on sustainability and human rights are better prepared for the future. The business case includes protecting brand and reputation, adapting business models to new markets, and avoiding stranded assets. In practice it means using resources more efficiently, preparing for regulatory changes, preventing costly disruptions, and building a motivated workforce. The shift was underway. In 2023, the proportion of executives who felt the business case was clear 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗱 compared to 2022 (Capgemini Research Institute, A World in Balance 2023). Over 50% of organisations planned to boost sustainability investments, shifting from seeing them as a cost to a source of value. With some legislative frameworks being weakened, many internal champions for human rights are under pressure to justify their work purely in financial terms. The challenge is that short-term ROI rarely reflects the full value of investing in people and planet. Simultaneously, global volatility is redrawing the business risk map. Labour rights disputes, climate-related migration, and community opposition to projects are becoming more frequent — and can halt operations overnight. In recent years, supply chains have been stalled for months due to unrest and unsafe conditions, major brands have lost market access due to human rights concerns, and shareholder attention to social risks has intensified. Human rights safeguards are therefore not just about avoiding bad press — they are about preventing operational paralysis, regulatory penalties, and stranded investments in unstable environments. This calls for a new way of framing the business case — not as something measured in quarterly returns, but as a strategic investment in resilience, agility, and long-term licence to operate. Leaders already invest in innovation and emerging technologies without guaranteed short-term payback; sustainability and human rights deserve the same long-term vision. The question is no longer about 𝘪𝘧, but whether leaders are ready to commit to the time frame and depth of investment it requires. 📢 How is your organisation reframing its business case for sustainability and human rights? We support organisations in designing strategies that work in practice. • Why the business case for sustainability still matters - a Löning opinion
  • One of our core missions is helping companies bring human rights commitments to life. Regulations such as the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (#LkSG) and BAFA guidance can feel complex, but our role is to translate them into clear, actionable steps for sustainability, compliance, and risk management teams.   Recently, Katharina Anuscheh Behrend, LL.M., Consultant and Head of Legal, together with Alice Homuth, Head of Consulting, hosted an on-site strategy training workshop with a longstanding client. Together, we reflected on progress, aligned on upcoming priorities, and explored the challenges and opportunities that will shape our work together into 2026.   💬 As Katharina described, it was “an inspiring exchange on strategy, innovation, and what lies ahead together.”   𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 — 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 👉  • Empowering cross-functional teams to identify and address human rights risks early. • Strengthening company-wide capacity to meet both regulatory and stakeholder expectations. • Building long-term resilience and trust through responsible business practices. At Löning – Human Rights & Responsible Business GmbH, we know sustainable impact comes through partnership: learning together, adapting to change, and ensuring that human rights principles are not just written in policies but lived every day.   #HumanRightsStrategy #CapacityBuilding #Sustainability #SupplyChain #DueDiligence #ResponsibleBusiness

Through our 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 series, we engage with sector representatives, NGOs, topic experts, academics, and researchers — each bringing unique insights into their work, the challenges they face, and how their priorities intersect with ours. In June, we had the pleasure of welcoming Thomas Mademann and Felix Dalstein from GMVK Procurement GmbH for a hybrid learning exchange with colleagues joining both in person and online. They shared a rich perspective on procurement, from process optimisation and risk management to strategic buying, while showing how technology can help advance sustainability objectives. Our discussion also explored how procurement teams approach change management and navigate the evolving sustainability and business landscape. Many thanks to Thomas and Felix for their time and expertise. Conversations like these broaden our technical knowledge and strengthen the links between sustainability and other critical areas because meaningful progress happens when sectors and perspectives learn from one another. #CapacityBuilding #SustainableSupplyChains #Colearning

  • 👋 Team Member Spotlight: Meet Sarah Blank, our senior consultant in business and human rights, helping organisations navigate complex human rights governance and strategy challenges with clarity and purpose. 💬 On what drives her work “When I first started working in Business & Human Rights, I came across Löning and was immediately impressed by the team’s expertise. In our field, we deal with complex topics that sit at the intersection of competing priorities and require multiple perspectives to find the best solutions. At Löning, we bring those perspectives together — helping clients see different angles and use them strategically to create impact.” 🌟 On why our work matters “The economic success of the future won’t be built with the business practices of the past. With finite resources, climate change, and global crises shaping our reality, I’m motivated to help organisations adapt and thrive in a new era of responsibility. It’s rewarding to contribute to shaping this new way of doing business.” 💬 Outside of work Sarah is passionate about wine and fascinated by how grape variety, climate, and ageing shape its flavour. • ➿ 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗦𝗥𝗗 - 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 ➿ Double materiality is at the heart of the CSRD. It is where many companies underestimate the time and cross-functional effort required. Getting it right can take months, even for those with established ESG systems. 🔸 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲-𝗼𝘂𝘁) focuses on how your business affects people and the environment across operations, value chains, products, services, and relationships. Negative impacts are judged by their severity and likelihood; positive impacts by their scale, scope, and likelihood. 🔹 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲-𝗶𝗻) flips the lens, looking at how sustainability matters affect your business value. A topic is financially material if it triggers — or could reasonably be expected to trigger — material financial effects over the short, medium, or long term. This scope is broader than that of financial statements, covering risks and opportunities based on their likelihood and potential magnitude. Most companies have yet to fully integrate sustainability matters into their strategic planning, reporting frameworks, risk management, and third-party due diligence — or align all of that with ESRS guidance on time horizons. This means they’ll need a mix of tools to assess impacts, risks, and opportunities. Scoring tools, web scraping, interviews, workshops, and peer benchmarking all have a role but no single method is enough on its own. Strong double materiality assessments don’t happen in a silo. They require collaboration between sustainability, finance, risk, and operations, and they work best when you start early, iterate, and embrace the mindset shift CSRD demands. 💬 Curious how to turn double materiality from a compliance headache into a strategic lens for growth? Have a chat with our reporting expert Maxine Bichler at 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗲@𝗹𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.𝗼𝗿𝗴. #DoubleMateriality #CSRD #ESRS #ImpactMateriality #FinancialMateriality

  • 👋 Team Member Spotlight: Meet Paolina Hagengruber, our director of strategy and business development, aligning business success with responsible practices. 💬 On what drives her work “Helping political and business leaders understand that responsible business and long-term profitability go together. When companies address supply chain risks and act responsibly, they build more resilient operations — protecting their revenue and staying competitive.” 🌟 On why our work matters “Right now, businesses in Germany, across Europe and beyond are facing serious challenges, both economically and politically. Legal uncertainty means compliance isn’t enough anymore. What matters most is when companies stay committed to human rights because they recognise its importance for long-term success. Supporting that shift in mindset is something I’m proud to contribute to.” 💬 A surprising fact Before she ever stepped into the world of strategy, Paolina dreamed of becoming an astronomer.
