Shift welcomes the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards exposure draft, issued yesterday. The draft offers genuine simplification for companies preparing reports, while still delivering meaningful information for their stakeholders. In our commentary, we recognise how the revisions support more practical and coherent reporting in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights — including clarity on the direct connection between risk-based due diligence and the assessment of material impacts, which then set the basis for identifying material risks. We also highlight one area requiring urgent attention: the discriminatory approach to wage disclosure, which would allow companies to apply lower standards for employees outside the EU. Workers have a human right to a living wage. A consistent and fair approach is essential to ensure meaningful, comparable disclosures for all stakeholders. 👉 Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/e88khU8g #SustainabilityReporting #HumanRights #LivingWage #DoubleMateriality #EUReporting #EUOmnibus #EFRAG #CSRD #EuropeanCommission #CorporateReporting #GreenDeal #ESRS

  • 🌏 Investors and lenders increasingly recognize that addressing the social impacts of climate transition are essential to its success. Where the social dimensions of climate action have been ignored, there has been public backlash and stakeholder resistance.   🔎 But how can lenders and investors integrate a people-centred lens into their climate strategies in practice? What does meaningful stakeholder engagement look like in this context? What are good indicators for measuring the “justness” of a company’s climate efforts?    🗓️ From Q3 – Q4 2025, Shift will run a clinic to support investors and lenders to embed a people-centred lens into their climate strategies, through a combination of support from Shift, peer learning in a constructive and confidential environment, and access to expert insights and tools. By the end of the clinic you’ll have the tools you need to take an integrated approach to climate change and human rights through the investment process.    ℹ️ Numbers are limited. You can download the full brochure on our website - https://lnkd.in/eFhvi9jB - or contact Ashleigh Owens for more information.

  • Proposed changes to EU sustainability legislation under the Omnibus Simplification Process risk creating parallel, fragmented due diligence systems inside companies. As the EU legislative process enters a critical phase, the window to get these changes right is narrowing.   At stake is the integrity of a risk‑based approach — a methodology that has underpinned responsible business conduct for over a decade. It directs companies to focus on the most severe human rights and environmental risks, wherever they occur in their value chains. It’s not just principled; it’s practical.   In her latest opinion piece, Rachel Davis, Shift’s Co‑founder and Vice President, explores why businesses should press for coherent, risk‑based reform that delivers real outcomes for people and planet.   Read Rachel’s full piece here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ewMzziPC   #BizHumanRights #CSDDD #CSRD #OmnibusDirective

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)'s launch of its new climate and energy standards this week marked a milestone for transparency in climate action — and for centering people within it. Shift’s President and CEO, Caroline Rees, was honoured to join the “Unlocking Climate Impact Reporting” conversation alongside leading voices from business, policy, and civil society. Rees was a member of GRI’s Technical Committee for the drafting of the standards. She shares her reflections on why embedding human dimension in climate reporting is critical. “It was a pleasure to join the conversation at GRI’s launch of its climate and energy standards – sincere congrats to the whole team for delivering the first reporting standards on climate that embed a human dimension. Every climate transition or adaptation plan affects workers or communities in fundamental and important ways. We are already seeing that where they ignore the interests of the people whose lives are impacted, outright opposition can result and scupper the best of technical plans. This will become an ever more critical consideration for investors, who need to understand whether they can rely on companies’ transition and adaptation plans or not. Importantly, the GRI standards also go beyond asking solely for narrative reporting on how the impacts on people from transition and adaptation efforts are addressed. Narrative is important, but we also need a way of judging what has actually worked and what hasn’t. While we have lots to learn about how best to measure the ‘justness’ of the transition, the GRI standards have made a start with some meaningful metrics we can already apply. This is a welcome development. In our work at Shift, we are continuing conversations with a range of organizations and experts to keep moving this discussion forward on how to effectively measure how just the transition is in practice. We look forward to continuing to learn alongside others and support further improvements in the measures we use.” Find out more about Shift’s ongoing work on just transition metrics here: https://lnkd.in/gd2HE2Wf Caroline Rees Davinder Kumar FRSA Rachel Davis Mark Hodge Brianna Peterson #JustTransition #GRI #ClimateAction #ESRS #SustainabilityReporting #HumanRights #ShiftProject

  • Read the latest viewpoint on the EU Omnibus Proposal, where Shift’s vice-president Mark Hodge sets out how reinforcing the basics of risk based due diligence can aid EU policy makers in the quest to simplify European sustainability regulation. In it, Mark separates fact from fiction about what risk based due diligence means in practice. He argues that getting back to basics can offer legal certainty and minimise administrative burden for all businesses, while still meeting the original aims of EU sustainability regulation to ensure that companies active in the single European market contribute to sustainable development by addressing the most severe negative human rights and environmental impacts in their own operations and value chains. Read the full viewpoint here: https://lnkd.in/eWBzqv5B

  • Last week, Shift set out the ways in which the European Commission’s proposed changes to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive would create administrative burden for companies, while preventing them from managing their sustainability risks. This week Caroline Rees explores the potential impact of the Omnibus Simplification Package proposals on the legislation’s ability to respond to demands from across Europe for action on rising inequalities. Without addressing growing social backlash, political volatility and economic instability, talk about competitiveness is pointless.
