- 5. 1.- (Group 1:Paula / Group 2: Marta) EXTERIOR. Torre de los leones. OUTSIDE. Lion Tower. •Estamos delante del Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. We are in front of the Alcázar of the Christian Kings. •Es un castillo-palacio donde se han encontrado numerosos restos arqueológicos -romanos, visigodos y árabes– que muestran las sucesivas culturas que se asentaron en Córdoba. •This is a castle and a palace where lots of archaeological remains- Roman, Visigoth and Arabs- have been found, which show the different cultures been established in Córdoba.
- 7. • Fue construido por el Rey Alfonso XI en el siglo XIV. It was built by King Alphonse XI in the 14th century. • Lo más destacable aquí son sus magníficos jardines, los mosaicos romanos y los baños reales. The most outstanding here are its magnificent gardens, the Roman mosaics and the royal baths. • Estamos delante de la “Torre de León”. We are in front of the “Lion Tower”. Ésta es la entrada principal al monumento. This is the main entrance to the monument. • Ahora vamos a ser recibidos por la Concejala de Educación del Ayuntamiento de Córdoba en el Salón de los Mosaicos. Después vamos a visitar el monumento. • Now we are going to be received by the Education City Councillor in the Mosaics Hall. Then we are going to visit the monument.

- 12. 2.- (Elena Lozano) SALÓN DE LOS MOSAICOS. MOSAICS HALL. Muchas gracias a la Sra Luisa Arcas por dar la bienvenida a nuestro centro británico en este precioso salón lleno de historia. Thanks very much to Ms Luisa Arcas for welcoming our British partner school in this great hall full of history.
- 13. Éste es el Salón de los Mosaicos. This is the Mosaics Hall. Fue la sede del Tribunal de la Inquisición a partir del siglo XV. It housed the Court of the Inquisition from the XVth century. La Inquisición castigaba a los no católicos. The Inquisition punished the non- Catholics.
- 14. Hoy día se usa para celebrar bodas civiles. Nowadays it is used to celebrate civil weddings. Los mosaicos romanos que se muestran aquí son de los siglos II y III descubiertos en la Plaza de la Corredera. The mosaics shown here are from the 2nd and 3rd centuries discovered in the Corredera Square.

- 17. 3.- SARCÓFAGO ROMANO. ROMAN SARCOPHAGUS. (Group 1:Laura/ Group 2:Javier) Sarcófago romano del siglo III. Roman 3rd century sarcophagus. Un matrimonio se prepara para traspasar las puertas entreabiertas del Más Allá. A couple is ready to go across the half open After Life doors. Las puertas están decoradas con cabezas de leones y carneros, protectores de las tumbas. The doors are decorated with lions and rams heads, graves protectors. Están acompañados de un filósofo y una pedagoga. The couple are with a philosopher and a woman pedagogue.
- 18. En la esquina izquierda hay una paloma, relacionado con el viaje al Más Allá. There is a dove on the left hand corner, related to the journey to After Life. En los laterales del sarcófago hay dos caballos alados, Pegasos, sobre dos panteras, relacionados con Baco. There are winged horses, Pegasus, on panthers on both sarcophagus sides, related to Baco.

- 21. 5.- TORRES. TOWERS. (Group 1:Andrea Fdez / Group 2: Elisa) El castillo es un perfecto cuadrado de dos plantas con una torre en cada esquina. The castle is almost a perfect square of two floors with a tower in each corner. Las torres están conectadas por galerías con almenas. The towers are connected by walkways with battlements. Haz una foto de las galerías que conectan las torres. Take a picture of the galleries connecting the towers.

- 24. 6.- TORRE DEL LEÓN. LION TOWER. (Group 1: Andrea Fdez / Group 2: Elisa) Ésta es la Torre del León desde arriba. This is the “Lion Tower” from the top. El nombre viene de una de las gárgolas que se puede ver en la planta superior. The name derives from one of the gargoyles which can be seen on the upper floor. Es la torre más antigua. It’s the oldest tower.

They were used for looking through or firing weapons.

- 28. 7.- TORRE DEL HOMENAJE. HOMAGE TOWER. (Group 1:Andrea Fdez / Group 2: Elisa) (Desde fuera) Ésta es la Torre del Homenaje y torre principal. This is the Homage Tower and the main tower. ¿Tiene forma redonda, octagonal o cuadrada?. Has it got a round, octagonal or square shape?
- 29. Aquí es donde los ocupantes juraban proteger la fortaleza. This is where the occupants swore oaths to protect the fortress. Por encima hay una torre más pequeña con balcón cubierto, que era donde la Inquisición hacia las ejecuciones públicas. On top there is a smaller tower with a covered balcony, where the Inquisition carried out its public executions.

- 33. 9.- BAÑOS REALES. ROYAL BATHS. (Group 1:Andrea Ruiz/ Group 2:Marina) Éstos son los Baños Reales, hechos por el rey cristiano pero en estilo califal. These are the Royal Baths, made by the Christian King but from Caliph tradition.
- 34. Esta primera habitación es el vestuario. This first room is the changing room. Las siguientes tres habitaciones son la sala fría, la sala templada y la sala caliente. The next three rooms are the Cold Room, the Warm Room and the Hot Room. Tiene claraboyas en forma de estrellas que proporcionan luz y ventilación. - 38. 11.- LOS JARDINES ANTIGUOS. OLD GARDENS. (Group 1:Andrea Ruiz/ Group 2:Marina) •Siguiendo la tradición árabe, palmeras, cipreses, naranjos y limoneros se mezclan con fuentes y estanques para crear el ambiente único. Following the Arab tradition, palm trees, cypresses, orange trees and lemon trees mix with fountains and pools to create this unique atmosphere.

The water was brought in by an aqueduct from the Sierra Morena. La gran noria de la Albolafia cerca del río Guadalquivir ayudaba con el abastecimiento. The great Albolafia waterwheel in the River Guadalquivir nearby helped with the supply.

- 41. La Reina Isabel la Católica hizo parar la noria porque el ruido no la dejaba dormir. Queen Elizabeth the Catholic made the waterwheel to stop because of the noise that did not allow her to sleep. Acércate e intenta ver la noria. Get closer and try to see the waterwheel.

- 43. 2.- ESTANQUES DE LOS JARDINES. GARDENS PONDS. (Group 1,2: Inés, Miriam and José Fco.) Este monumento resume la historia de Córdoba. This monument summarizes the history of Córdoba. Fortificado por los romanos debido a su estratégica situación a orillas del Río Guadalquivir. Fortified by the Romans due to its strategic location at the banks of the Guadalquivir River.

- 45. Durante el asentamiento árabe el Alcázar formaba parte del palacio califal. During the Arab settlement the Alcázar formed part of the Caliphal Palace. Fue convertido en residencia real después de la conquista cristiana de la ciudad en 1236 por Fernando III, con Alfonso XI, el Justiciero, adquirió su aspecto presente como castillo. It was turned into a royal residence after the Christian Conquest of the city in 1236 by Ferdinand the IIIrd. With Alphonse the XIth , the Avenging, it acquired its present castle like appearance.

- 48. • Luego fue La Corte de la Inquisición. Then it became the Court of the Inquisition. Entre 1822 y 1931 fue usado como prisión. Between 1822 and 1931 it was used as a prison. Finalmente, en 1955 el Alcázar y sus jardines fueron transferidos al Ayuntamiento de Córdoba. Finally, in 1955 the Alcázar and its gardens were transferred to the Town Council of Cordoba.

These large ponds were added in the 19th century. Este monumento es Patrimonio Mundial. This monument is World Heritage. Hacer una foto con tu grupo en primer plano y es estanque con el Alcázar de fondo. Take a picture with your group at the foreground and the pond with the Alcázar at the background.

- 54. • 15.- BAÑOS CALIFALES. CALIPH BATHS. (Group 1,2: Ana Gómez, Mª Carmen, Elena Serrano) (From the outside. Group 1 first Baths, Group 2 first Hands monument.) Fueron construidos en siglo X. They were built in the 10th century. El edificio era un complejo termal o “hamman” hispano-musulmán. The building was a thermal complex or Hispano-Muslim “hamman”.
- 55. • La zona este tiene la estructura de los baños califales clásicos con un pórtico, vestuario, sala fría, sala templada, sala caliente, horno y otros servicios. The eastern part has the classic Caliphal baths structure with a portico, dressing room, cold room, warm room. La zona oeste fue construida desde el siglo XI hasta el XIII durante las dinastías Almorávide y Almohade.

- 57. 16.- MONUMENTO DE LAS MANOS. HANDS MONUMENT. (Group 1,2: Ana Gómez, Mª Carmen, Elena Serrano) Éste es el monumento a la princesa Wallada al- Mustakfi y Ibn Zaydun, conocida en la ciudad como “El Monumento de las Manos”. This is the monument to Princess Wallada al-Mustakfi and Ibn Zaydun, known in the city as “The hands monument”.
- 58. Wallada y Ibn Zaydun eran dos poetas del siglo XI que tuvieron una apasionada historia de amor. Wallada and Ibn Zaydun were two poets from the 11th century who had a passionate love story. Wallada fue la poetisa más famosa de Al Andalus, hija de uno de los últimos califas. Wallada was the most famous female poet in Al Andalus, daughter to one of the last Caliphs. Tenía un salón literario en Córdoba donde educaba a chicas. She had a literary hall in Córdoba where she educated girls.
- 59. Un poema de cada uno de los amantes está grabado en el monumento en español y árabe. One poem from each of the lovers is engraved on the monument in both Spanish and Arabic. Las manos representadas en el monumento nunca se tocan. The hands represented in the monument never meet. Estos amantes tuvieron una relación muy difícil. - 61. 17.- JUDERÍA. JEWISH QUARTER. (En la Plaza de las Bulas) (Group 1,2: Rafa, Paqui, Álvaro, Sara) •La Judería es el barrio donde han vivido los judíos en Córdoba desde época romana. The Jewish Quarter is where the Jews have lived in Córdoba from Roman times. Es el centro histórico de la ciudad y es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1994. It is the historic centre of the city and it is World Heritage since 1994.
- 62. • La Judería tiene un trazado muy irregular, con estrechas callejuelas y pequeñas plazas, rodeadas de casas encaladas con un patio central. The Jewish Quarter has a very irregular design, with narrow streets and small squares, surrounded by whitewashed houses with a central patio. ¿Por qué creéis que las calles aquí son tan estrechas? Why do you think streets are so narrow here? Las calles estrechas protegen del calor y se pueden defender mejor. Narrow streets protect from the heat and are easier to defend.
- 63. 18.- MAIMÓNIDES. (Group 1,2: Rafa, Paqui, Álvaro, Sara) Ahora entramos en la calle Judíos…y esta pequeña plaza es la Plaza de Tiberiades, donde se encuentra la estatua de Maimónides. Now we are in The Jews Street… and this small square is Tiberiades Square, where we can find the statue of Maimónides.
- 64. • Moisés Maimónides (1135-1204) fue uno de los científicos más relevantes de la Edad Media. Moses Maimonides (1135-1204) was one of the most relevant scientifics of the Middle Ages. Nació en Córdoba, la capital de la España musulmana, pero tuvo que dejar su tierra natal por ser judío a la llegada de los intransigentes islámicos almohades. He was born in Córdoba, the capital of Muslim Spain, but he had to leave his native land for being a Jew when the radical Muslim Almohads arrived in Spain.
- 65. • Fue médico y filósofo de ricos y pobres. He was a doctor and a philosopher for rich and the poor. Incluso llegó a ser el médico del sultán de Egipto, Saladino. He became Saladin’s doctor, Egypt’s sultan. Escribía en árabe y en árabe con caracteres hebreos. He wrote in Arabic and in Arabic with Hebrew characters. Su legado se transmitió a las universidades medievales europeas. His legacy was transmitted to European Medieval universities. Ahora vamos al zoco. Now we are going to the souk.
- 66. 19.- ZOCO MUNICIPAL. TOWN SOUK. (Group 1,2: Rafa, Paqui, Álvaro, Sara) Zoco significa mercado en árabe. Souk means market in Arabic. Aquí tenemos un mercado de artesanía cordobesa que se creó en los años 50. Here we can find a market of Cordobesian Handcrafts created in the 50’s.
- 67. • Es un edificio de estilo mudéjar de dos plantas y con un magnifico patio porticado. This is a two-floor Mudejar style building with a magnificent arcaded patio. Encontramos artesanos del cuero, ceramistas y plateros de filigrana cordobesa. Here we can find leather artisans, potters and Cordobesian filigree silversmiths.
- 68. La típica artesanía de cuero de Córdoba se llama cordobán y guadamecí y tiene su origen en el siglo VIII con la llegada de los musulmanes a la ciudad. The typical leather handicraft is called cordobán and guadamecí and has its origin in the 8th century with the arrival of Muslims to the city. En esta página web puedes ver los productos artesanales. - 69. 20.- SINAGOGA. SYNAGOGUE. (Group 1,2 Amara and Sergio) Enfrente de este edificio está la sinagoga, el lugar de oración de los judíos. In front of this building, we can find the synagogue, the prayer place for Jews.
- 70. • Es la única sinagoga que se conserva en Andalucía y una de las tres que aún tenemos en España del siglo XIV. This is the only existing synagogue in Andalusia and one of the three remaining in Spain from the 14th century. Por desgracia cierra los lunes. Unfortunately they close on Monday. Quizás podáis verla otro día con vuestros compañeros de intercambio. Perhaps you can come again and visit it with your exchange partners.
- 71. • 21.- CAPILLA MUDÉJAR DE SAN BARTOLOMÉ. SAINT BARTHOLOMEW MUDEJAR CHAPEL. . (Group 1,2 Amara and Sergio) Aunque está cerrada hoy, podéis ver una capilla cristiana con estilo musulmán. Although it is closed now, you can see here a Christian chapel in Mudéjar style. Fue hecha por los artesanos musulmanes que se quedaron en la ciudad después de la reconquista cristiana. It was made by the Muslim artisans who remained in the city after the Christian reconquest.
- 73. • Este arte es fruto de la coexistencia de las culturas cristiana, musulmana y judía en la Córdoba medieval. This art is the result of the coexistence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures in medieval Córdoba. Esta capilla está integrada en el edificio de la actual Facultad de Filosofía y Letras por el ahora vamos a pasar. This chapel is part of the building of today’s College of Arts, which we are going to pass by now.
- 74. • 22.- CALLEJA DE LA FLORES. FLOWERS ALLEY. (Group1,2: Beatriz Rico and Alfonso) • Ahora estamos en la Calleja de las Flores. Now we are in the Flowers Alley. Es la calle más visitada por los turistas. This is the most visited street by tourists. Desde esta perspectiva podéis ver una bonita fuente octogonal adornada con un capitel romano. From this perspective, we can see a nice octagonal fountain adorned with a Roman capital.
- 75. • Aquí se suelen poner músicos que tocan la guitarra española. Here you can usually listen to street musicians playing the Spanish guitar. Si miramos hacia atrás, veremos la torre de la catedral. If we look back, we can see the cathedral belfry tower.
- 76. • En esta calle podéis visitar uno de los más famosos talleres de cuero cordobés, llamados, como hemos dicho antes, cordobanes y guadamecíes. In this street we can visit one of the most famous Cordobesian leather workshops called, as we said before, cordobanes and guadamecíes.
