- 2. Comparisons are expressions used to compare two people or things. In English, comparative adjectives are formed by adding an ER at the end of a word or by using more, less, and as. Ex. Robert is taller than his sister.
- 3. There are several phrases in Spanish to make comparisons. • The first set uses ADJECTIVES to compare two nouns. • The Adjective ALWAYS agrees with the FIRST noun.
- 4. más . . . que (more. . . than) Mi abuela es más artística que mi padre. Note that artística is singular and feminine to agree with “abuela” (the first noun).
- 5. menos . . . que (less. . . than) La clase de ciencias es menos divertida que la clase de inglés. Note that divertida is singular and feminine to agree with “la clase” (the first noun).
- 6. tan . . . como (as. . . as) Tus hermanas son tan serias como el maestro. Note that serias is plural and feminine to agree with “hermanas” (the first noun). Note that SER is conjugated as SON to agree with“hermanas(ellas)”(the first noun).
- 7. You can also use those same expressions without an adjective. a. Me gusta ir a la biblioteca más que el gimnasio. b. Me gustan las hamburguesas menos que los tacos c. ¿Te gusta hablar tanto como escuchar?
- 8. Finally, there is a group of irregular comparison words. These only change in NUMBER (not gender) with the first noun. mayor (es) que (older than) Mis tíos son mayores que mi tía. Note that mayor changes to mayores to agree with the FIRST noun.
- 9. Menor (es) que (younger than) Mi hermana es menor que yo. Sus primos son menores que su tío. Mejor (es) que (better than) La clase de español es mejor que la clase de inglés.
