Gustar with Infinitives

∗Even though we usually
 translate the verb gustar
 as “to like,” it literally
 means “to please.”
Gustar with Infinitives

∗So when you say,
“A mí me gusta correr”
you’re actually saying,
“To Run is pleasing to me.”
Gustar with Infinitives

∗Correr is the subject of the
 sentence, and me is the
 indirect object. Here’s the
 pattern:
Gustar with Infinitives

∗Indirect object(person) +
 gustar + subject(activity)
∗The subject in a sentence
 with gustar usually follows
 the verb.
Gustar with Infinitives
∗Each subject pronoun has its
 own Indirect object pronoun.
Yo Me Nosotros Nos
Tú Te Vosotros Os
Él Le Ellos Les
Ella Le Ellas Les
Usted Le Ustedes Les
Gustar with Infinitives

∗To emphasize or clarify
who is pleased, you use an
 additional a + pronoun:
Gustar with Infinitives

∗A mí me gusta dibujar.
∗A él no le gusta trabajar.
∗A Ellos les gusta bailar.
Gustar with Infinitives

A mí Me A Nosotros Nos
A ti Te A Vosotros Os
A él Le A Ellos Les
A ella Le A Ellas Les
A Usted Le A Ustedes Les
Gustar with Infinitives
∗ Now let’s put it all together:
I like to dance (To dance is pleasing to me)
   Who? Verb What?
A + Pronoun Gustar Verb in the Infinitive

    A mí me gusta bailar
Gustar with Infinitives
 ∗Robert likes to work
  (To work is pleasing to
  Robert)

∗A Roberto le gusta trabajar.
Práctica – fill in the missing
              information.

∗ 1. A Luisa ____ gusta comprar ropa.
               le
                  les
∗ 2. ¿A Ustedes _____ gusta estudiar?
∗ 3. A nosotros _____ gusta comer galletas.
                  nos
∗ 4. ¿A ti ____ gusta andar en patineta?
            te
            me
∗ 5. A mí ____ gusta mucho mirar la televisión.
∗ 6. ¿A vosotros ____ gusta hacer la tarea?
                   os
