Asia-Pacific is a premier destination for global data centre operators, with some of the largest global deals being posted in region in 2024. In a recent article in Asian Power, Garvan Barry, Regional Director North Asia talks about aligning energy and data centre planning to increase long term investment and cohesion in grid and transmission supply to meet demand. Garvan notes “efficient, grid-ready energy infrastructure is a force multiplier for the Asia-Pacific data centre expansion. However, constraints in the energy infrastructure are potentially hindering that growth”. Access to clean energy, strategic energy corridors and multi-use campuses are just some of the initiatives discussed to encourage the energy data centre alignment. In this article, titled 'A data-driven blueprint for smarter, more resilient cities', Gunjan Chawla, Global Head of Research, outlines four key trends shaping urban strategy and planning. These include the shift from macro-to-micro planning, the growing importance of data-driven development, the recognition that resilience extends beyond natural disasters to execution challenges, and the integration of complementary asset classes. A rapidly retiring workforce, competition from other sectors, and persistent gaps in vocational training are straining the talent pipeline. At the same time, economic uncertainty and shifting career priorities among younger generations are intensifying the challenge, leaving the industry under mounting pressure to attract and retain skilled workers. In his recent insight, Jeff Peragallo, Director and VP of Operations, Linesight, shares practical strategies firms can adopt to stay ahead of labor shortages. From leveraging off-site fabrication and forging strategic partnerships, to conducting labor market surveys and enhancing jobsite conditions, Jeff highlights how proactive planning helps teams deliver projects on time and on budget, even in a constrained workforce environment. The APAC commercial construction market continues to adapt, driven by changing work patterns, agile workplaces, and strong sustainability initiatives. There’s a growing emphasis on sustainable building practices and the delivery of government-mandated green projects, with retrofitting and ESG-compliant office activity outpacing new builds in much of the region. Scott Halyday, Regional Director, Southeast Asia, offers his perspective: "APAC’s commercial construction sector is evolving fast, driven by shifting work dynamics and growing ESG pressure from both regulators and investors. Sustainability is no longer a value-add, but a baseline expectation, with growing emphasis on performance over perception. The focus now is on creating future-fit assets that meet both regulatory and market demands."
