New research from the TCforBE Project takes a hard look at the EU’s sustainability reporting regime (2022) – and asks: Is it enough to spark real change in biodiversity governance across global agri-food value chains? 📢 Our latest report, “𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙀𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙮? 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙐 𝙤𝙣 𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝘼𝙜𝙧𝙞-𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙎𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨" dives into the early impacts of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS E4), with a spotlight on biodiversity in agri-food supply chains linking European demand to ecologically rich but vulnerable regions of the Global South 🇪🇺🌍. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 🎯 Most companies acknowledge biodiversity, but integration into strategy and supply chain action remains rare. 🎯 Disclosures are often generic and symbolic, lacking measurable goals or real-world impact. 🎯 Equity, Indigenous rights, and local voices are largely absent from reporting and governance. 🎯 Financial markets are starting to pay attention – but need clearer, comparable, and actionable data to invest in nature-positive change. ⚠️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸? Without greater regulatory clarity, operational guidance, and attention to justice, current reporting risks remaining performative. ✅ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Europe can lead globally – but only if disclosures drive decisions, and decisions lead to measurable, equitable outcomes for biodiversity. 📚Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/dWYt9iSN ✨Credit to our researchers Othmar Lehner, Eva-Maria Öhlinger, Truc Thanh Van, and Theresa Harrer for this insightful work. 💬 What do you think: Can regulation really drive transformation in global agri-food systems? Transdisciplinary research project identifying ways to address biodiversity loss caused by agricultural trade
Over ons
The Transformative Change for Biodiversity and Equity (TCforBE) project is a multi-national research consortium working to identify ways to address global biodiversity loss caused by the demand for agricultural commodities in the European Union. The consortium comprises nine partners from seven countries – Kenya, Colombia, Cameroon, France, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK. TCforBE is using transdisciplinary research processes to generate new knowledge, tools, and stakeholder capacity to drive transformative change in agrofood systems and advance sustainable trade. TCforBE is funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 program. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the EU nor the EC can be held responsible for them.

As part of the TCforBE Project, we recently piloted the CamPod “serious game”—a dynamic, role-playing activity designed to spark dialogue and deepen understanding of sustainability challenges in the cocoa sector. 🟤 In Lomié and Yaoundé, Cameroon 🇨🇲, 30 participants representing farmers, traders, regulators, researchers, CSOs, and consumers stepped into the shoes of different value chain actors from Cameroon to Europe. This interactive process, led by our researchers, Marina Benitez Kanter and Verina Ingram (Forest & Nature Conservation Policy Group, Wageningen University) and Prof. Martin Tchamba (Université De Dschang), along with Marieke Sassen (Wageningen Plant Research), Céline Dillmann (LEAF Inspiring Change), Borice MEKOK, and Thierry Mekoa, enabled participants to better understand each other's positions and the trade-offs involved in achieving sustainability and equity. 🟢 Next stops for the CamPod game: Soon at Wageningen University & Research and, later at Chocoa in 2026! Interested in joining us to explore how you can be part of a more sustainable and equitable cocoa value chain? Let’s talk! Cocoa Games Everyone is in the cocoa game ! Look closely and you will see one happy farmer, and many other cocoa farmers not so thrilled, a cooperative member looking confused, a transporter on a bicycle, a coxeur on a motorbike, and behind them sacks and calabashes full of cocoa beans, ready for sale. Behind them the green symbolizes the complex agroforestry system and the nearby forest that provide so much to the community. There’s also a university bringing new knowledge and ideas of how the game can be played differently. More winners and less losers. 🔬 New Research Alert from NRI's TCforBE Project A project at the Natural Resources Institute has been investigating a critical but often overlooked question: what are the true environmental costs of international trade agreements? While trade deals are typically evaluated through an economic lens, the project's latest research reveals a more complex story - one where carbon emissions and ecological damage are systematically shifted across borders, often from wealthy to developing nations. As we work towards net-zero targets and sustainable development goals, understanding these hidden environmental transfers is essential for creating trade policies that work for both people and planet. Our findings challenge us to fundamentally rethink how trade agreements are designed and implemented in an era of climate crisis. Read on to see how trade agreements are reshaping our global environmental landscape: 👇
🌍 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 🌍 Trade agreements are often praised as drivers of economic growth. But what about their unseen environmental price tag? A new global study by TCforBE Project researchers reveals how trade deals shift carbon emissions and ecological impacts across borders, reinforcing inequality and accelerating environmental harm. 🔍 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆: 🚢 Environmental impact shifting: Trade agreements amplify 'outsourcing' of emissions, undermining global climate progress. 🌡️ Unequal burdens: Developing economies frequently shoulder disproportionate environmental harm as production moves offshore. ❌ Many agreements have weak environmental clauses; even strong ones lack long-term effectiveness. ♻️ Urgent need to critically rethink trade frameworks through the lens of ecological limits and distributive justice 💡 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Understanding the hidden environmental costs of trade is critical for governments, businesses, and civil society. It highlights the urgent need to: ✅ Ensure trade policies align with global climate goals. ✅ Build sustainable supply chains that reduce emissions and protect ecosystems. ✅ Create fairer trade frameworks, where the environmental and social costs are not unfairly shifted to vulnerable communities. ✅ Embed transparency, accountability, and enforceable green standards into every agreement. Did you know that many forest decisions are made without the people who know them best? On World Nature Conservation Day, we ask: who gets to decide how forests are managed and whose knowledge counts when it comes to conserving nature? In Sweden, small and medium-sized forest owners often hold detailed knowledge of local ecosystems and how climate change is affecting them. Yet their voices are rarely heard in national or EU-level policy. Through BIOTraCes, researchers at University of Gothenburg are working to change that. They're co-developing tools with these forest owners to: 🌱 Enhance biodiversity through locally adapted forest practices 🌍 Tackle biodiversity loss and climate change together ✅ Create management systems that are inclusive, fair, and ecologically sound Forest conservation isn’t just about protecting trees, it’s about empowering the people who live with them. #WorldNatureConservationDay #Biodiversity #Forests #ClimateJustice #TransformativeChange Marie Stenseke | Katarina Haugen | Oscar Jacobsson
