Про нас

METALAB is a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation working at the intersection of urbanism, culture, social inclusion, and sustainable development. We create solutions to improve the living environment in Ukrainian cities by combining research, design, and community engagement. Our main areas of focus are creating affordable housing for people who have lost their homes due to the war (the CO-HATY initiative), developing a culture of product design and innovation in materials (the POLE centre), and organising events, research and programmes that shape a new vision for Ukrainian cities. METALAB supports the values of feminism, transparency, environmental awareness, and social equality. We work at the local level in communities, particularly in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, and Vinnytsia regions, and we also collaborate internationally with partners in the fields of architecture, housing policy, design, and urbanism.

    It seems that by now everyone has learned to associate an accessible space with the presence of a ramp at the entrance. But what else makes a home, café, or public institution inclusive? Thе carousel highlights five features that can make a space more comfortable for a broader range of people. Of course, these are not all the indicators of an inclusive environment, but they are the ones that anyone can take into account at the stage of interior planning. In our projects, inclusive solutions are always integrated into the design process. For example, in the buildings in Shypynky, Horodok, and Kalush, we have provided separate inclusive apartments on the ground floor. In another project aimed at improving living conditions, which we are implementing with the support of the German NGO Sign of Hope, we are equipping shelters with inclusive solutions: ramps for access to upper floors, adapted bathrooms. As part of this project, nearly 2,000 people in 21 shelters will experience tangible improvements, especially those from the most vulnerable groups. Inclusive housing is not a luxury but a condition for a dignified life for everyone.

    The fourth year of the full-scale invasion. 4,594,254,00 internally displaced persons are officially registered in Ukraine. For many of them, housing that was meant to be temporary has become permanent. At our project CO-HATY, we renovate buildings and create new housing, as well as work to improve conditions in existing shelters. We are currently implementing a project in 21 shelters across three regions of Ukraine. After conducting a needs assessment, we are now starting procurement of furniture, appliances, and inclusive elements to ensure accessibility. We have also engaged an inclusion consultant and a designer to develop solutions. This work is ongoing, and the improvements will benefit around 2,000 people for whom these shelters have become home. The project will run until June 2026. The improvements will be implemented within the framework of the project “Comprehensive Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons and Returnees in Ukraine through Protection, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Cash Assistance, Shelters, and WASH” Programs, implemented by the German NGO Sign of Hope, which is implementing the project with funding from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, in cooperation with a number of Ukrainian partners.

    In our latest interview, Agata Maziarz speak with Yuliia Popova (Housing Initiative for Eastern Europe (IWO)) and Iryna Yakovchuk (CO-HATY) about transforming Ukraine's housing crisis response.
