Sanex has its latest TV campaign banned by the ASA (www.AdvertisingStandards.org) after its “inclusive” approach misfires… Representation has never been more complex for advertisers. Not only is there a risk of under representation, but a risk of over representation and misrepresentation. The unisex soap brand promoted their shower gel’s benefits for soothing dry skin by depicting a black person covered in cracked, dry clay, followed by a white person delighting in their soft, showered skin after using the product. Just two complaints were received, both stating that they felt the ad promoted a stereotype of white people having better skin than black people. Though Colgate-Palmolive argued they were “being inclusive”, and representative of issues that existed, the ASA upheld that it could unintentionally present a juxtaposed narrative of superiority. For me, this situation highlights the sensitivities of “being inclusive”. Were there no white people in the ad, there would have been no complaints. Were there no black people in the ad, I also believe there would have been no complaints. It was the inferred context that created the problem, though we might assume not there by intent, it was clearly there for anyone who might be sensitive to it. Does this kind of outcome set a precedent that furthers or harms the debate for inclusivity in ads, when there will always be plenty of cultural representation omitted?
