At the heart of hospice are dedicated volunteers who go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference. Compassus hospice volunteer Laci Anderson of Billings, MT, is known for her personalized approach and the special bond she forms with our patients. She gets to know them—their favorite hobbies, stories and interests— to tailor every visit. Laci's standout tradition is "Farm Visits" when she shares photos and videos of her beloved farm animals. Little Bit the pig is a huge hit! Laci helps patients create scrapbook albums of old photos, lost letters and other mementos. She made a late-night Fourth of July visit so a patient could watch fireworks. She spent hours researching a patient's family war story. For Compassus hospice patient Gerry Higginbotham, casting a line into the ocean was more than a pastime—it was a dream he quietly carried for years. Thanks to the compassion and creativity of our Fayetteville, GA, team and the generosity of the Hospice Angels Foundation, that dream became a reality. With the support of RN Case Manager Ellen Rudolph, Hospice Care Consultant Laurie Breckenridge, Business Office Manager Laynie Humphrey and Social Worker Amanda Hardeman, Gerry took a meaningful trip to Tybee Island with his daughter—creating memories, honoring his late partner and finding peace by the sea. Although he didn’t catch a fish, Gerry came home with something far greater: connection, joy and a full heart. This is what it means to "Care for who I am."
