The Dempsey Center team (Brandon Hotham, Interim President + CEO and Heather Plati, Senior Director of Development) recently had the honor of welcoming Senator Angus King, his wife Mary Herman, and their daughter Molly Herman, along with Sheri Biller and Les Biller of The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, to our new Dempsey Center in Westbrook, Maine. Their visit was more than a tour, it was a powerful affirmation of the importance of accessible, high-quality supportive care for those impacted by cancer. We’re deeply grateful for their time, interest, and shared commitment to the wellbeing of individuals and families navigating this disease. The Dempsey Center is proud to be a part of the Together for Supportive Cancer Care Coalition, an initiative sponsored by the Biller Family Foundation, working to advance and elevate supportive cancer care nationwide. At the Dempsey Center, supportive cancer care is provided at no cost to our clients, thanks to the generosity of donors and partners. Supportive cancer care addresses the emotional, physical, and practical challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis, meeting individuals and families where they are and helping them move forward. It helps with treatment adherence, side effect reduction, and avoidance of unnecessary healthcare utilization and spend. It's not only the kind thing to do, it's the right thing to do! Champions like Senator King and the Billers helps ensure that this model not only endures but continues to grow, reaching more people across Maine and beyond. Thank you for believing in the work we do. Your support inspires us every day! #SupportiveCancerCare #DempseyCenter #Maine #CancerSupport #HealthEquity #BillerFamilyFoundation #AngusKing #TogetherForSupportiveCancerCare

Dempsey Center reposted this
Last week was busy—but incredibly meaningful! I had the privilege of attending the Milken Institute Global Conference in support of our founder, Patrick Dempsey, who spoke about the importance of caregiving and how his family’s experience caring for their mother during her cancer journey became the genesis of our work at the Dempsey Center. We made some incredible connections, and I’m excited about how these new relationships will support the Center’s mission moving forward. Later in the week, I was honored to attend the Together for Supportive Cancer Care Annual Summit, representing the Dempsey Center’s work. It was refreshing and inspiring to be in a room filled with people dedicated to advancing supportive cancer care across the country. We engaged in rich discussions around policy, research, and working with employers to elevate understanding of this essential care model. Supportive cancer care saves money and helps individuals impacted by cancer stay adherent to treatment and live well beyond it. As we often say at the Dempsey Center: Supportive cancer care isn’t just the kind thing to do—it’s the right thing to do. Special thanks to The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation for supporting this coalition and the broader movement. It was an honor to be part of these important conversations and to connect with so many professionals who are working tirelessly in this space. Your work inspires me—and our entire team at the Dempsey Center—to keep pushing forward. Onward to a future where supportive cancer care is standard oncology care—everywhere.
What a wonderful day! We left the The 2025 Together for Supportive Cancer Care Summit energized—with more clarity and a deeper commitment to building a system where everyone has access to whole-person supportive care. Supportive care isn’t extra. It’s essential. And as a coalition, we’re working to make sure it’s defined, measured, funded, and accessible—before, during, and after treatment. A huge thanks to all our members and attendees for showing up with purpose, perspective, and passion. This is what movement-building looks like—and we’re just getting started. “Our goal is to advocate for the best care. To see so many others fighting for that same goal… it makes me hopeful.” #SupportiveCancerCare #TSCCSummit2025 #WholePersonCare

Earlier this year, we were approached by the Maine Cabin Masters about a unique fundraiser to support our mission—they were going to refurbish a tiny cabin using sustainable materials and auction it off to raise money for the services we provide. Since then, we've watched them turn this tiny bunk cabin into something truly incredible. And now the time has come for it to go to a new home! We're auctioning off this amazing piece of Maine Cabin Masters history on MONDAY, April 28th! Want it to be yours? Email the team at MCMAuction@dorseytv.com to start the process of becoming a bidder. Bidding won't only get you this stunning bunk house, the funds are also going to a good cause. All money received at the auction will go to providing no-cost support for people impacted by cancer at the Dempsey Center. Here at the Dempsey Center, we offer holistic support services to cancer patients, survivors, and their care partners and loved ones. Ranging from one-on-one mental health counseling to bodywork therapies to group movement + fitness classes and so much more, all of our offerings are designed to improve one's wellbeing at any stage of their cancer journey. Learn more about what we do at www.DempseyCenter.org.

Support for people impacted by cancer came in like waves during yesterday's Dempsey Day of Giving, presented by Brookfield Renewable. Inspired by the different paths of support, individuals, families, and corporate partners contributed to making life better for people impacted by cancer. To everyone who covered cancer patients, survivors, care partners, bereaved individuals, family members, and loved ones in support through a gift—thank you. Your generosity, at every level, is already making a difference for the over 2,500 clients we care for each year. Whether you made a gift, shared a post, or connected with us on social media, you are providing comfort through compassion, connection, and choice to anyone impacted by cancer. https://lnkd.in/eFShNT_W

After a diagnosis and its resulting treatment, patients may often experience reduced range of motion, changes in balance, or pain in areas that may not have been there before. Because of this, finding ways to move one's body can be challenging. However, for many, movement can play a critical role in healing both physically and mentally. At the Dempsey Center, we support clients through one-on-one movement consultations, as well as a variety of classes developed with a cancer impact in mind. From Yoga for Cancer Care to Tai Chi/QiGong and so much more, our classes are designed to give clients a space to move their bodies in a way that is comfortable to them. Our instructors—both staff and community partners—know the importance of meeting the patient, care partner, or loved one where they are at and allowing them to choose when a modification is necessary. Through all of our classes, our primary goal is to ensure everyone feels comfortable from start to finish. Your support today allows all those impacted by cancer to discover a new way to find comfort—all at no cost to them. Educational workshops help empower clients to gain the knowledge they need along their cancer journeys. Presented by staff and community members alike, these workshops span various topics based on need, interest, and the latest information we have in cancer care. Some of our most beloved workshops are our Nutrition Classes, held in-person, virtually, and hybrid. Clients can attend these workshops to learn more about different diets or new ingredients, or offer new recipes and insight into food preparation. Some classes even offer kitchen basics to help patients and care partners alike find their way around. Our Nutrition Program also extends into one-on-one consultations to help patients navigate their changes in taste buds or personal nutrition goals. Regardless of how one accesses our Nutrition Support Services, they are sure to discover something new. Educational Workshops, especially Nutrition, are crucial in supporting people impacted by cancer. Make a difference in supporting workshops like "Cooking for Health + Healing," "Soups On!," "Eating for Energy," and more by making a gift during Dempsey Day of Giving.
