The California State University Transportation Consortium (CSUTC) will hold “CSUTC 2025: Shaping the Future of Transportation” at California State University, Long Beach on August 15-16, 2025. The two-day conference is dedicated to innovation, research, and workforce development in the transportation sector. Representatives from across the CSU system and academic disciplines will discuss the most important issues affecting California transportation systems today and tomorrow, ranging from artificial intelligence research and the urgent planning needs of the 2028 Olympic games to port operations and forward-thinking workforce development. The conference is funded by CSUTC, which is led by the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San José State University. The Honorable Jim Beall, former California State Senator and Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Housing, will deliver the Keynote Address on the morning of August 15. “We’re thrilled to be convening CSUTC 2025 to spotlight transformative research, groundbreaking training programs, and cross-campus collaboration across the CSU system,” said MTI Executive Director Karen Philbrick, Ph.D., who will serve as Chair for the conference.   “The conference will feature an impressive roster of transportation researchers to address current and future transportation challenges,” said Co-Chair Hamid Rahai, Ph.D., who serves as Professor in the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering & Biomedical Engineering at CSULB. “Our research and workforce training should focus on innovation, technology transfer, and future workforce training challenges,” Rahai added. At just 12 years old, Kyla McKinney joined a middle school team unsure of herself but determined to contribute to a STEM competition she had never heard of before. That team won MTI’s 2014 Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition. Today, Kyla is preparing for her master’s in Environmental Science and has worked in wildlife rehab, environmental justice, and youth education. She interned with the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP), where she gained a deeper understanding about the transportation sector’s impacts in vulnerable communities and spread awareness about how to reduce emissions around the Port of Oakland. Her journey shows how programs like MTI’s Garrett Morgan Competition ignite confidence and purpose in the next generation of STEM and mobility leaders. Congratulations MSTM student Miguelito Santos, PE for receiving a Professional Engineers in California Government (PECG) scholarship! Miguelito is a Sr. Transportation Engineer with the CA High-Speed Rail Authority. He previously worked with the California Department of Transportation for more than two decades. He is expected to graduate with his MSTM from SJSU in June of next year.
