My statement on behalf of New Disabled South: This afternoon, the House passed Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill”, which as we know, is expected to do a historic amount of harm to the most vulnerable communities across this country. For disabled people, the impacts will be catastrophic. This unfortunately comes as no surprise. At a moment in our history when we are as divided as we ever have been, when the interests of the wealthy and powerful are put ahead of working class and poor Americans, and when dehumanization has become the norm, it may feel like all our efforts to stop these evil things from happening are futile. But y’all, I want us to think about something. This is not the first time this country has legislated cruelty. Indigenous, Black, Disabled, Japanese-American, queer, Palestinian, and countless other marginalized communities have faced the devastating impacts of a state built upon genocide, colonial land theft, white supremacy, eugenics, anti-Blackness, and imperialism. Of course, the consequences have been devastating, but our communities have continued to survive and, despite how it may seem in this moment, have continued to build a better world. Right now, our call to action is to hold close to sacred community. To care for each other. To build new systems that are rooted in our shared values and our collective liberation. To build the kind of world we want to see, together. “Survival is an act of resistance and defiance.” We must help each other survive. We have to think radically different about our 2-4 year cycle of gains and losses that put actual lives at risk. We have to build care webs, support mutual aid efforts, do deep political education with our communities, build working class solidarity. We have to do these things and hold onto the real hope that we can make our shared vision of a better world come to fruition. I know it’s possible. New Disabled South and New Disabled South Rising are working to help build this. We will hold accountable every politician that has put the interests of the wealthy and powerful over the lives of everyday people, and we will work to mitigate the harm of this disastrous bill. But even more than that, we’re going to be helping to build the foundation for this better world, outside of these systems that harm us, and we hope you will join us. We need each other now more than ever.

Disability. Resilience. Community. I’ve lived my entire life in the South. Despite the deep challenges systemic inequity, subminimum wage, physical inaccessibility—this is also where I’ve found connection and community. The disability community here is a tight-knit, resilient force. We know the realities of surviving in places not built for us. But more importantly, we know what it means to show up for one another. Our community isn’t just about proximity it's about shared values, mutual care, and a relentless commitment to justice. As we enter Disability Pride Month, I’m reflecting on what it means to be disabled in the South. Many suggest we leave for more accessible cities, but to me, leaving would mean giving up on a place that still holds potential. I believe in staying. I believe in fighting. Because resilience isn’t just about enduring—it’s about building something better. I believe the South can change. I believe my city can change. And I believe that every disabled voice raised for justice brings us closer to the community we deserve. My brilliant and dear friend and co-founder Kehsi Iman Wilson is moving on from her role as Chief Operating Officer at New Disabled South! She'll be staying in the NDS/NDSR universe and will always be my co-founder, but her life is growing and expanding and that is amazing to witness. While I'm extremely sad that I won't have her by my side day to day, we're still working on some amazing things together that I can't wait to share more about. That leads me to some big news: we're hiring for a new Chief Operating Officer! Please take a look at the listing below and if you feel you fit the bill, we'd love to consider you. We don't use AI to review candidates, so please have patience with our team as we navigate this process. The last full time job we posted, we had over 3,700 applicants! Also, respectfully, please do not email or message me or our team about your application or to inquire about an informational interview. Unfortunately we just don't have the bandwidth at the moment, but rest assured, every single application gets at least one human thoroughly reviewing. We look forward to seeing your application! https://lnkd.in/et5fXw72
