University Hospital is an independent medical center with more than 500 licensed beds, an active medical staff of more than 600, and over 3,000 employees. Located on a sixty-three acre campus, University Hospital is a regional resource for advanced care in a wide range of medical specialties. University Hospital is the only hospital in New Jersey to be awarded Gold Plus recognition by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for Heart Failure and Stroke. Designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center, the Hospital maintains 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of care in specialties such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, internal medicine, plastic surgery, and pediatrics. On behalf of the JEMSTAR Flight Team, Chief Flight Nurse Joseph McNamara and JEMSTAR Operations Supervisor Michael Carrig have tollowing to share: Introducing the K9 Kona Medevac Program – a first in New Jersey. In 2023, NJ State Police K9 Kona sustained a traumatic head injury during a search mission. At the time, there was no official plan for how to give medical help or transport injured K9 officers. The JEMSTAR medevac team stepped in, flying Kona over 85 miles to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital for lifesaving treatment. She made a full recovery and is back at work, now with a cool pair of doggie goggles. Kona’s rescue inspired a new program so all NJSP K9s can get the same emergency care. The K9 Kona Medevac Program trains the JEMSTAR Medevac Team to give medical help to injured K9s while in flight, under the direction of a veterinarian. Now, every NJSP K9 unit has access to lifesaving medical assistance in the air. Proudly launched with Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, New Jersey State Police, NJSP K9, NJSP Aviation, University Hospital, and University Hospital EMS, this program sets a new standard for protecting our four-legged officers. On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the Fanwood Rescue Squad and Fanwood Fire Department, in collaboration with the New Jersey State Police and University Hospital, conducted a multi-agency drill to practice air-medical response procedures with JEMSTAR Air Medical Helicopter. The training event featured an informative lecture for first responders from a JEMSTAR Flight Paramedic, followed by a demonstrated landing of the NorthSTAR helicopter at Forest Road Park, which serves as Fanwood’s Designated Landing Zone. This exercise provided first responders with a valuable opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art aircraft and gain a comprehensive understanding of how the JEMSTAR program operates. The NorthSTAR helicopter, a 2011 Agusta Westland AW139, is staffed by a highly specialized team consisting of two pilots from the New Jersey State Police, one flight nurse, and one flight paramedic from UHNJ. Based at Somerset Airport in Bedminster, NJ, the helicopter has a rapid flight time of approximately 6 minutes to Fanwood. It delivers a Critical Care environment directly to the scene of an emergency and can transport up to two patients by air to specialized trauma or stroke centers. The life-saving services of the JEMSTAR program are provided at no cost to any patient. This service is funded by a small fee applied to all vehicle registrations in the state of New Jersey. The Fanwood Rescue Squad would like to thank all participating agencies for their partnership in this drill, which helps our first responders stay prepared and ready for any situation.
