These nuclear reactors fit on a flatbed truck. How safe are they? Idaho Strategic Resources wants to power its mining machines with a nuclear reactor small enough to be packed in a shipping container and loaded on a truck. The project would put the company in the vanguard of microreactor development, which backers say could spur wider use of nuclear energy. This comes as the nuclear industry is aiming to miniaturize, looking to place hundreds of small power plants across the nation. At least a half dozen companies are racing to develop tiny reactors, which bear no resemblance to the hulking power projects dotting riverbanks and coastlines across the United States, with their cooling towers and massive concrete containment structures. The flatbed-size reactors are designed to generate as little as a single megawatt of power — roughly one-thousandth the amount of a large legacy unit. It’s enough to power 1,000 homes, a single manufacturing plant or even a remote island owned by a billionaire (one company claims it has received such an inquiry). More than half of the calories Americans consume come from ultra-processed foods that studies have increasingly linked to health problems, according to new federal data released Thursday. Youth consume more calories from the products than adults do — nearly 62 percent compared with 53 percent, according to the new report. Studies have identified the industrially produced foods as risk factors for chronic diseases shortening lifespans in the United States. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has repeatedly said the nation’s food supply is “mass poisoning” this generation of children and has made overhauling it one of his main priorities. Ultra-processed foods are made up almost entirely of substances extracted from other foods or “synthesized in laboratories” and typically contain many additives such as sugar, sodium, emulsifiers and preservatives. Sandwiches (including burgers), sweet baked goods, savory snacks and sweetened beverages were four of the top five sources of calories from ultra-processed foods among both youth and adults, according to the CDC report. Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook gave President Donald Trump a customized plaque with a 24-karat gold base during an Oval Office news conference Wednesday, moments before Trump announced that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in U.S. jobs and suppliers. “It’s a unique unit of one,” Cook said as he displayed the glass sculpture engraved with the president’s name, adding that it was designed by a former U.S. Marine corporal who now works at Apple. The price of gold is currently more than $3,300 per ounce, according to Reuters. Read more: https://wapo.st/4ll0flL

Former circus artist Krystian Kaulis grew up with an alligator named Frau Meyer. His father, who was also in the circus industry, bought her at the age of two to participate in circus acts, and raised the alligator alongside Krystian. Despite the many dangers, Kaulis says he trusts the alligator. "I respect her boundaries," said Kaulis. "And I think that's very important in this matter."
