We live in an increasingly divided world and most of us have encountered our fair share of aggressive people and difficult confrontations. Fortunately, we now have the tools to become peacemakers and transform emotionally volatile situations and hurt feelings to calm non-aggressive ones.

In this book, you will learn an accessible and proven peacekeeping method to calm an angry person or diffuse a volatile situation in ninety seconds or less. You will learn how to remain calm and centred when facing insults, provocation and disrespect from others, and how to say exactly the right thing in the right way at exactly the right moment.

Along with practical exercises and scenario-based examples, each chapter focuses on specific themes, such as dealing with emotionally charged teenagers and frustrated co-workers.

With De-Escalate, we can bring peace to all facets of life, cultivate healthier relationships, and participate in creating a more caring and compassionate future for us all. I share practical tips on how to be civil in an uncivil society.

De-Escalate won the Book of Excellence Award in 2017 and has now been translated into five languages.

  • Elusive Peace: How Modern Diplomatic Strategies Could Better Resolve World Conflict

I wrote this book as a critique of the international diplomatic community’s inability to mediate conflicts worldwide. I wrote this book as a critique of the international diplomatic community’s inability to mediate conflicts worldwide. It’s a startling truth that only 3% of all conflict ends in peace, compared to 90% in the commercial world. In this book, I go behind the headlines to provide an in-depth analysis to understand why crucial negotiations fail.

I argue that diplomats often enter negotiations with flawed assumptions about human behavior, sovereignty, and power, and are using a model of European diplomacy that dates back to the 18th century to solve 21st-century problems.

I provide numerous examples that the key failure in current diplomatic efforts is the entrenched belief that nations, through their representatives, will act rationally to further their individual political, economic, and strategic interests. However, scientific understanding of how people act and see their world does not support this theory. On the contrary, research from decision-making theory, behavioral economics, social neuropsychology, and current best practices in mediation indicate that emotional and irrational factors often have much, if not more, to do with the success or failure of a mediated solution.

Reviewing a wide range of conflicts and negotiations, I demonstrate that the best efforts of negotiators often fail because they fail to take into account the deep-seated values and emotions of the disputing parties. I draw on my long experience as a professional mediator to describe the process of building trust and creating a climate of empathy that is the key to successful negotiation and can go a long way toward resolving even seemingly intractable conflicts.

  • Peacemaking: Practicing at the Intersection of Law and Human Conflict

    Cascadia Publishing House

After 20 years of working as a civil trial lawyer, I undertook a Masters's in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies that changed my worldview on human conflict and showed me why the law is so ineffective at helping people solve problems.

I wrote this book to accompany a law class I taught called ‘Peacemaking for Lawyers.

I wrote this book to accompany a law class I taught called ‘Peacemaking for Lawyers.

The book is a comprehensive examination of how the law and the Western legal tradition generally fail to acknowledge the multi-dimensional nature of human conflict. I weave together the many strands of academic thinking on human conflict to create an integrated view of why people fight, how they fight, what they fight over and how they can make peace, whether in the courtroom or beyond.
