BACKGROUND
The Organization
The Bender Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington is a dynamic, mission-driven nonprofit organization with a rich history spanning over 170 years, tracing its roots to the first Young Men's Hebrew Association organized in Baltimore in 1854. Located on a 25-acre campus in Rockville, Maryland, the Bender JCC serves as the cornerstone of Jewish community life in the Greater Washington area, welcoming over 1,000 visitors daily and receiving approximately 400,000 visits annually. The organization operates as a non-sectarian community center that primarily serves the Jewish community while also embracing the broader Montgomery County community.
The Bender JCC offers an extensive range of programs and services including early childhood education, youth camping programs, senior adult services, cultural arts programming through the Gildenhorn/Speisman Center for the Arts, fitness and wellness facilities, and specialized programs for individuals with special needs. The organization is particularly recognized for its pioneering work in Jewish education, boasting one of the largest Center-based adult Hebrew language programs in North America and the acclaimed Institute for Jewish Learning, which has won national awards for its innovative Judaic education model.
The Bender JCC has an annual operating budget of about $12 million and generates over 90% of its revenue through membership fees, program services, contributions, grants, and endowments. As part of the larger Jewish Community Campus, the Bender JCC collaborates closely with other vital community organizations including the Jewish Social Service Agency and the Hebrew Home, creating a comprehensive network of support for the Jewish community of Greater Washington.
