Here’s the surprising “sweet spot” where customer effort actually drives long-term engagement. I’ve been exploring how Customer Effort Score (CES) connects with time-to-value in SaaS onboarding, and AI has been an incredible partner in uncovering patterns I wouldn’t have spotted on my own. One thing that stood out: most teams measure CES only after major milestones, but the real insight emerges much earlier during those first micro-interactions when customers are just forming expectations. Even more interesting, AI-driven analysis revealed that customers who experience a moderate amount of effort (not zero effort) early on often show stronger long-term retention. The sweet spot seems to be when customers feel slightly challenged but know they’re supported every step of the way. Why does this matter? It suggests that a little well-placed “good friction” actually helps customers build confidence, feel invested, and develop real ownership of the platform, something a purely effortless path doesn’t always achieve. For me, this reinforces a bigger principle: Customer Success isn’t just about removing friction,it’s about designing the right kind of journey that empowers customers and builds lasting relationships. This doesn’t mean being less supportive,quite the opposite.
