What happens to food that is lost or wasted? According to our ViewPoint survey, only 12% send their food waste to landfills or sewers. The majority is recycled into animal feed, composted or used for energy recovery or new food products. While this sounds encouraging, companies also acknowledge that they could be doing much more to reduce and make good use of their food loss and waste. 🌍 Tackling Food Waste for a Sustainable Future 🌱 Did you know that when food waste ends up in landfills, it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas? This not only contributes to climate change but also wastes the precious resources used to produce that food, such as water, land, and energy. The environmental impact is significant, and we must also consider the issues of malnutrition and famine. One effective solution to combat food waste is composting. By composting, we can restore soil fertility and create a more sustainable future. Let's work together to reduce food waste and make a positive impact on our planet! #Sustainability #FoodWaste #Composting #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalProtection

Massachusetts is recognized as the nationwide leader in food waste reduction. Many states have implemented bans on food waste, but only MA has seen significant impact from this legislation. CET's Chief Growth Officer, Lorenzo Macaluso, went on the WGBH Radio and Television "Under the Radar" radio show along with Bonnie Heiple (commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection MassDEP) and Caroline Pam (co-executive director of the Island Grown Initiative on Martha’s Vineyard, co-founder of Kitchen Garden Farm) to discuss the ways MA takes wasted food reduction farther. "When technology and new policies intersect, it’s easy for local businesses dealing with food waste to get lost in the technicalities that result. That’s why Lorenzo Macaluso, chief growth officer at the Center for EcoTechnology, says it is necessary to educate Massachusetts residents on the environmental, social and economic opportunities of addressing food waste, and then helping people and businesses follow through on implementing strategies. "So not just making those recommendations, but then holding their hand through the process of implementing those at their facility,” Macaluso said.“ You can now listen to the episode on the WGBH website here: https://lnkd.in/gmrbaaW8 Photo by Meredith Nierman

Food scraps don’t have to end up in the trash—they can help feed the earth. Here’s why you should consider composting: 🍅 Reduce Waste – Keeps organic matter out of overflowing landfills. 🫑 Lower Emissions – Prevents methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere. 🥔 Nourish the Earth – Creates natural fertilizer that helps plants thrive without chemicals. At YE Foundation, our waste-to-energy mission starts with waste reduction—and composting is a powerful first step that anyone can take. ♻️ Quick Tip: Keep a small bin in your kitchen for fruit peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and veggie scraps, then transfer them to a compost pile or community composting site. #YEFoundation #WasteNotWednesday #Composting #Sustainability #WasteReduction #GreenLiving #CircularEconomy #GoGreen #EcoFriendly #ClimateAction #OrganicWaste #SoilHealth #FoodWaste #GreenFuture

Shake it. Rinse it. Recycle it. ♻️ It’s easy to think a fertiliser or seed bag is empty once you’ve tipped it out. But give it a shake and you’ll see there’s often more left inside. That’s product you’ve paid for and residue that can cause problems later if it’s not cleared out. The same goes for spray cans. A triple rinse isn’t just good practice, it’s essential: ✅ Prevents contamination ✅ Allows us to recycle the containers safely 🎥 In the video, Charlie shows you how it’s done with both bags and cans. Quick, simple steps that make a big difference. At Agri.Cycle, we make sure farm waste gets dealt with the right way. And it starts with simple actions on farm: 👉 Shake your bags 👉 Rinse your cans 👉 Keep waste out of landfill 📍 Doing your bit means we can do ours. Together, we keep UK farms compliant, cost-efficient, and environmentally responsible. #AgriCycle #FarmWaste #Recycling #SustainableFarming #Compliance www.agricycle.co.uk

♻ NATIONAL ALLOTMENTS WEEK: TURNING WASTE INTO VALUE ♻ An allotment is a small plot of land rented by individuals or communities to grow their own fruit vegetables and plants. They are not just about fresh produce they are powerful local examples of the circular economy in action. On any given plot you will see: 🔄 Organic waste transformed. Food scraps coffee grounds and shredded cardboard are composted feeding the soil and avoiding landfill. 📦 Materials reused. Old pallets become raised beds plant pots are reused year after year and packaging is given a second life. 💧 Water recycled. Rainwater is captured and reused for irrigation reducing waste and easing pressure on mains supply. 🚚 Packaging and transport cut. Produce is grown metres from where it is eaten eliminating single use packaging and food miles. Allotments demonstrate how simple local actions can close resource loops keep materials in use for longer and significantly cut waste. They prove that a circular economy does not have to start in a factory. It can start with a compost bin and a watering can. #NationalAllotmentsWeek #CircularEconomy #Recycling #ZeroWaste #Sustainability #FoodWaste #CommunityGrowing

Food waste reduction is critical for today’s foodservice operators. Each year, more than 60 million tons of food waste are sent to landfills, but composting food scraps alongside certified compostable packaging offers a practical solution. Using renewable-resource packaging designed to break down with food waste helps divert tons of waste from landfills while producing nutrient-rich compost that supports sustainable agriculture. Every plate of wasted food is a missed opportunity - for our people, our pockets, and our planet. 🌏✨ That’s why End Food Waste Australia is working to halve food waste by 2030, and Too Good To Go is helping businesses turn unsold meals into profit instead of waste. 💡 Waverley Council partnered with both organisations to host a networking night exploring how businesses can be part of The Great Unwaste. Together, we discussed practical steps to cut food waste, unlock value in surplus food, and strengthen our local circular economy. 📢 Waverley-based businesses can also contact Too Good To Go for an exclusive local deal. This event was delivered as part of Council’s In The Loop program, proudly funded by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). 💚 #TheGreatUnwaste #WaverleyCouncil #Sustainability #FoodWaste
