AI promises a lot in retail — better personalization, more efficient operations, fewer stockouts. But what happens when the tech doesnt work? Here are a few numbers: - A survey of c-store retailers found that when a POS, payment controller, self-checkout, or similar system fails in one store, retailers lose on average $855/hour. The average downtime for these issues was just over 5 hours. - In broader terms, Gartner and related studies show that 98% of firms say an hour of downtime costs at least $100,000; 81% say it costs $300,000+; and about a third report losses of $1-5 million per hour. - For large retailers, POS or systems outages can run $5 million or more per hour in lost revenue. We like to call these "glitches” — but those blips on the radar hit sales, customer trust, employee productivity, logistics, and cost more to remedy than many expect.
