MOL, HD KSOE, HHI Get AiP for Floating Ammonia Cracker Unit

【Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Obtains AiP for Floating Ammonia Cracker Design】On September 10, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines(MOL) announced that it had jointly developed floating ammonia cracker unit with Korean shipbuilding companies and had received the Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design from Lloyd's Register Group Limited in the UK. By equipping ships with technology that separates ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen through thermal decomposition, it will be possible to supply hydrogen directly from the ocean to land. It will promote the use of hydrogen energy to achieve a decarbonized society. The AiP award ceremony was held on September 9 at Gastech, an international energy exhibition held in Milan, Italy. MOL’s Managing Executive Officer Suryan Wirya-Simunovic participated. For this project, MOL, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have completed the conceptual design, including the process and basic layout of the floating ammonia cracker unit. The ammonia decomposition process and module, which enables the supply of 1,000 tons of hydrogen per day, utilizes H2ACT, a hydrogen production technology owned by Kellogg Brown & Root International, Inc. (KBR) of the United States. This was made possible by developing and applying new catalyst technology in collaboration with Amogy, a US company. There is a need to build a supply chain to promote the widespread use of hydrogen, a clean energy source. The approach is aimed at supporting the development of a hydrogen supply chain in regions where onshore facilities are difficult to build. The project partners have completed the conceptual design of the FACU, including the process layout and general arrangement. Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR) contributed its ammonia cracking expertise and module design, applying its H2ACT #Technology to enable a single-train hydrogen production capacity of 1,000 tons per day. Amogy, a US-based ammonia-to-power solutions provider, introduced a new catalyst solution to the project. MARINE PUMPS🚢: DESMI's new DesFuel deepwell pump is the world’s first marine fuel pump designed from the ground up for all alternative fuel compatibility and flexibility. The DesFuel pump is capable of transferring LNG, ammonia, methanol, and LPG without the need for modification. It will be available in five sizes to cover all vessel types. The pump was designed and developed by DESMI’s engineering specialists, and each unit is built at the company’s production facility in China.
