Silicon Valley won’t even break a sweat. This week the United Nations General Assembly agreed to establish 2 new mechanisms for AI governance: 🔹 Independent International Scientific Panel on AI: 40 experts from around the world tasked with producing annual evidence-based assessments. 🔹🔹 Global Dialogue on AI Governance: an annual forum for states and stakeholders to debate how AI is deployed. This looks like progress ... on paper. But, what's the reality? Real power likely still sits with tech companies. And at the same time governments remain hesitant (or unable?) to rein them in. These new initiatives won’t change that dynamic anytime soon. That said, they do matter. By creating space for more countries, more disciplines, and more voices, they slightly reduce the risk of both misuse and missed uses of AI.
