Inside Out: Accessing Your Inner Voice

On October 17th, I'll be co-leading a workshop called Inside Out: Accessing, Managing, and Employing Your Inner Voices with my friend, colleague, and fellow improviser Dion Flynn. Dion and I will demonstrate and facilitate an improvisational process for deepening our awareness of our inner voices, and for expanding our capacity to "yes-and" ourselves.
Dion is an actor best known for portraying Barack Obama on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He is also one of Oprah Magazine’s “favorite creative thinkers” and the co-creator of the show Clanging w/Josh and Dion (with How I Met Your Mother star, Josh Radnor). [Cue Kat's inner voices, "How did I get so lucky!?" "Wow, I'm way out of my league!" "Gee, I wonder what will happen - Dion's a dynamo; I never know what to expect!"]
The workshop will delve into an area of fascination for creative people from the time of the earliest Greek drama to recent Pixar animated films: how do we live with, make friends with, control, and manage those ever-present voices inside of us? They compel, motivate, torment, and inspire, while often eluding, our conscious awareness. [Cue Kat's inner voices, "Too many verbs?"]
As performers and as human beings how can we get better at consciously noticing them in the first place? How can we engage with them beyond simply "managing” them? How can we recognize them as a source of wisdom and inspiration, not just a source of shame and control? Together we will work to access the voices that catalyze our creativity while taming those that constrain us.

3yAccessing my inner voice would make me so strong- I am afraid to let that voice out- it´s unconventional, not scared at all and pretty hippyish. Phew- it's scary to be ourselves in a world where they want us to hate ourselves so we buy more- yet will we ever be congruent and happy if we don´t?
