The Stories We Tell About Money

The Stories We Tell About Money

At April's Story Circle earlier this week, host Jeanne M. Lambin guided participants through the process of sharing their stories and gleaning group wisdom on the challenging topic of MONEY. This topic turned out to be particularly deep and personal - an insight in itself.

Here are some themes we noticed after taking time to reflect:

  • As a whole, we're trending toward a scarcity mindset.
  • Early experiences can influence our relationship with money
  • We can get hooked by the notion that money = personal worth. How do we distance ourselves from the concept of money to mitigate shame and value judgments?
  • Money is a tool, how can we build skills to be better able to use that tool?
  • Money is also a story. As humans evolved, we made it up so we could scale our society, so theoretically we can change our personal and societal relationships with money. How can we shift and be more aware of the stories we tell about money and their impact?
  • From a distance, we are clear about stories from generations before and their circumstances (for example, if grandmother lived through the Depression, then she has this relationship with money). This begs the question- what is the current story about money given the gap and new history? What do we want to notice from these emerging stories? How can we help shape them as they shape us, co-creating the story in the moment?

Our next StoryCircle, on May 10, will explore the topic of POWER. We hope you will find the process of sharing and listening to stories to be thought-provoking, enlightening, and perhaps even galvanizing.

At Koppett, we know that everyone is a storyteller. If you would like to share your experiences and thoughts about power, you can learn more about our next Story Circle and register at http://bit.ly/storycirclepower.

So true! Our relationship with money is one of the most complex and yet not often examined.
