Leading with Purpose: Shallu's Impact on Financial Inclusion and Diversity
At BAGGGEL, we celebrate the exceptional journeys of women leaders who inspire change and make an impact. Today, we are delighted to feature Shallu, a pioneering finance professional whose unwavering determination and innovative mindset have propelled her to the forefront of the industry.
To dive deeper into her inspiring journey, we asked Shallu a series of questions about her experiences, challenges, and vision—here are her insights.
1. Background and Career Path
Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to your current career path?
I was born in a small town in Rajasthan and did my schooling in Nepal. Destined to marry at 16 and start a family, my parents defied societal norms by prioritizing my education. As a bright student, the expectation was to pursue engineering or medicine, but my passion lay in entrepreneurship and finance. Now, after 20 years in the field, I continue to enjoy my work and am a constant learner of the possibilities technology can enable in the finance function.
What were your initial goals when you started your career, and how have they evolved?
Initially, I aimed to establish myself in a stable finance role, breaking away from traditional expectations. Over time, my goals have evolved to focus on leveraging technology to drive financial innovation and mentoring other women to achieve financial independence.
2. Challenges and Overcoming Them
What significant challenges have you faced in your career, especially as a woman in your field?
Societal expectations often questioned my interactions with male classmates, assuming I might "elope" with one of them. Later, living in a Delhi hostel, concerns about my safety as a young woman were prevalent. Choosing a corporate career over traditional paths also brought skepticism.
Can you share a specific instance where you had to overcome a significant obstacle or setback?
Despite societal pressures to pursue a traditional CA practice, I ventured into the corporate world, carving my unique path. Facing resistance and skepticism based on gender stereotypes, I used these challenges to strengthen my resolve, transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth.
3. Achievements and Milestones
What achievements are you most proud of in your career?
I take pride in consistently identifying opportunities for process improvement, leading to enhanced efficiency and reduced costs.
Is there a particular project or initiative that you believe significantly impacted your career or your organization?
Leading an audit last year, we reviewed supplier payments made during COVID-19, identifying significant financial gaps and implementing corrective processes. This initiative not only safeguarded the organization's finances but also reinforced the importance of vigilance and continuous improvement.
4. Work-Life Balance
How have you managed work-life balance throughout your career, and what advice would you give to others struggling with this?
Achieving a healthy work-life balance has been a priority. Building a strong support system, delegating non-essential tasks, and establishing clear boundaries have been key strategies. Open communication with family members has also been instrumental in maintaining this balance.
5. Mentorship, Sponsorship & Support
Have you had mentors, sponsors, or supporters who significantly influenced your career? How did they help you?
My parents instilled a "can-do" attitude, and choosing my life partner elevated my support system. During demanding times, such as long office hours, my partner took charge of our son's studies, allowing me to focus on my career. At work, I was fortunate to have leaders who believed in me, providing encouragement and opportunities for growth.
How important do you think mentorship, sponsorship, and support are in career development, especially for women?
A strong support system is crucial, especially during challenging phases. Mentors and sponsors can provide guidance, pull you out of impasses, and elevate you to the next level.
6. Diversity and Inclusion
In your experience, how has the landscape for women in your field changed over the years?
When I started, women working night shifts was taboo; now, parents take pride in their daughters' careers. While progress has been made toward a more equitable world, there is still work to be done.
What do you believe companies can do better to support diversity and inclusion in the workplace?
Recognizing that men and women are built differently is essential. Companies should understand that events like maternity leave are not statements on a woman's capability. Investing in women's growth, regardless of personal milestones, and creating a level playing field that respects life events are crucial steps toward true inclusion.
Shallu's journey exemplifies resilience, continuous learning, and the profound impact of a supportive network in overcoming challenges and achieving professional excellence.
