What I Learned from a Preschooler Today
Preschool Talent Show!
Do you have an image in your head already? Can you imagine three- and four-year olds getting on stage to share their talents and passions? We had magicians, singers, dancers, artists, narrators, block-builders, and vacuum cleaner specialists.
This may not seem like such a big deal, but it matters. It really matters. For some of them, just the act of walking on stage and (after waving joyfully to their families in the audience) speaking into the microphone was the hardest part.
Perseverance, public speaking, and risk-taking don’t just happen. We must stretch ourselves, do our #edgework and be willing to be a wee bit vulnerable. And today, these preschoolers did all of that.
I appreciated their courage. And I celebrated the moments when they called a friend or sibling on stage to stand with them. Watching along side of me one of our Middle Schoolers said, “You can feel support and love completely fill this space.”
Today, we celebrated our youngest students’ courage and vulnerability, knowing they are heading home at the end of the day a little braver, stronger, and grittier. And we reminded ourselves that schools, like any organization, ought to be places of opportunity, growth, and support.
Yes, today my preschoolers reminded me what really matters.
