What Are We Building… and Why?

Last week, I shared a post that went viral. It was a heartbreaking story from an attorney about a 16-year-old boy who took his own life after extended conversations with ChatGPT. It reached over 47,000 people on my LinkedIn feed.

There were hundreds of comments. Many were parents. Some were engineers. Several were definitely shaken. And what struck me wasn’t just the story—it was the silence it broke open. It clearly hit a chord...

Because deep down, we all know something is off.

We’ve created tools more powerful than anything we’ve seen in our lifetime. But somewhere along the way, we stopped asking the most important question:

What are we building… and why?

AI nor tech is not the problem. Speed is not the problem. Even disruption isn’t the problem.

The real problem is when we keep racing forward without a moral compass.

And this is something I hear so little about right now.

The loudest voices in AI are often those with the fastest models or the biggest market caps. But the voices we desperately need more of are the ones asking about values, ethics, and long-term impact. Not from a place of fear, but from love. From care. From leadership.

I am not anti-tech. I use AI daily. I collaborate with it and consider it a team member. I believe in its potential. But I also believe we’re at a crossroads—and how we lead right now matters.

This isn’t just about regulation. That will always take time. It’s about responsibility. It’s about protecting what’s sacred—our humanity, our children, our future. And this comes from great leadership, vision, values, and genuinely caring.

In the last two months I've been talking to a lot of founders, investors, and leaders of AI companies. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard from them--we need YOUR perspective, your focus on people and leaders, in our conversations. Because it is missing.

So here are some of my reflections:

  • What if we designed AI that truly understands emotional wellbeing?
  • What if trust and safety weren’t features, but foundations for all AI we build?
  • What if we slowed down—not to stall progress, but to ensure it doesn’t become harmful in anyway?

I’m not writing this because I have all the answers. I’m writing this because we need more people asking the right questions.

Try this with curiosity, and don't judge yourself. It might reveal how aligned (or misaligned) your current choices are with your deeper values.

Let me know what came through for you—I had a moment of both discomfort and clarity in my own answer lol. But I guess that is the purpose with these too!

As usual, you are on point, Karin. I share the same philosophy on the importance of the impact on human behaviors and how easily values can get lost in the noise and race to dominate the AI arena. At the risk of being a bit crude, it feels like it is one big pissing contest without taking stock in the ramifications of such development.
