WHAT ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO?
Everyone that knows me knows that I love quotes, so not surprisingly, today's blog is about a quote I just read:
“Pay attention to what you’re paying attention to!” Howard Rheingold
Firstly, let’s be clear, it is really hard to not get drawn into the things that are screaming out to get your attention! Acknowledging, if someone shouts “Fire!” then we need to pay attention, but given our extremely noisy world it is tremendously difficult not to pay attention to things that may not be serving us.
Everyone, it seems today is trying to get your attention TV, Social media, newspaper headlines – feeds pop up in almost every medium possible. LOOK AT ME! If we don’t put a filter on this, undoubtedly, the ones that scream the loudest will get our unconscious attention, often without us realising it. Given that what we focus on becomes our reality we should note how dangerous this ‘unconscious not paying attention’ can be.
So, let’s all take a moment to ensure that we don’t get unconsciously hooked into doing this. If we are serious about creating our own reality, we need to develop a way of consciously choosing what has the privilege of our attention. Please note that I deliberately used the word ‘privilege’, because in every moment there are many potential competitors for your attention and YOU get to choose who wins!
Every day I am trying my best to make decisions about what has the privilege of my attention. Do I want to waste that privilege by reading things or listening to people that, to be frank, add nothing to or indeed take away from, my experience of the day? Or do I focus on what fuels me, what inspires and excites me, and creates a positive experience of the day? It is my choice!
I started with a quote and I’m going to end with a quote, this time it is my quote – I’d be privileged if you can share this.
“In every moment there are many potential competitors for your attention and YOU get to choose who wins!” Lindsay Tighe
It’s YOUR choice – my advice is to choose wisely!
