DIGIPAK PLANNING &
CREATION PROCESS
Front Cover
The front cover of a CD Digipak is what the audience first see; therefore the front cover image, font and colour
scheme must be eye catching in order to grasp the audience’s attention.
“I like image 3 but with image 1’s effect. Also,
I like image 2 as the model looks directly into
the camera, but her strong aura/facial
expression juxtaposes the song itself in which
the lyrics encourage an aura of vulnerability
from heartbreak.”
Inspiration for the Front Cover (Planning)
SAMUEL BURGESS-JOHNSON
Artist and creative director – London based.
Burgess-Johnson created the album artwork for indie rock band The 1975 (their second album)
His work very much seems to be influenced by the artistic element to music, as he does not use the artist’s
faces (for promotional purposes) but instead imagery that relates to the music itself, not the artist.
Burgess-Johnson’s work for album
cover of ‘Walk Away’ by JMSN uses
one image and reverses the colour
for each to the CD (front cover and
back cover). The subject matter
being an ocean with texture is very
inspiring for my CD Digipak due to
my chosen alum title ‘Ocean Eyes’.
However, realistically I am aware
that I will not be able to create my
own version of this as I will not be
able to capture a birds eye shot
over the ocean. Therefore, I will just
this as inspiration or make an
improvised version of this as I find
it artistically creative and
attractive.
This piece of album artwork for CD ‘Who Disturbs the Sea’ appears
to use the art technique of marble printing to replicate the
movement and texture of the ocean. This is very inspiring for my CD
Digipak as it is also based around the ocean due to it’s name ‘Ocean
Eyes’.
‘Faded Canvas Mixtape’ for artist
Jacuzzi, created by Burgess-Johnson,
gives a youthful electric feel to the
artwork. This is due to the neon colours
that hit the metallic textured material.
The colours are subtle and compliment
each other, with the pinks and green
tones making the image eye catching.
Interpretation of Samuel Burgess-Johnson
I created a marble print by using purple blue and red marble ink mixed in water. I then took a photo of the print
and altered the colours on Photoshop to a cold colour ‘temperature’, and changed the hue to blue tones.

Making my CD digipak front cover (Creation process)
To create the front cover, I opened up media technology editing software Adobe Photoshop and loaded my digitally edited marble print image.
This is going to be the background of the cover. I then used the song title as inspiration and added a female eyes to the centre of the image. To
get rid of the unwanted white areas, I selected theQuick Selection tool to select the white areas and then clicked delete.
I then added my artist’s name and the album title in the desired fonts that had been chosen by a focus group. I repeated the Quick Selection tool
process to get rid of unwanted white areas, as well as CtrlT to resize the wording appropriately and the cropping tool.

Back Cover
The back cover is looked at when the audience wishes to see the track list in order to find out what songs
and how many are included in the CD itself. The back of the CD Digipak also includes fine print about
information such as the record label production, year of release, copyright etc.
Track lists often include between 12 - 17 songs, mine will have 15 that all have a common
theme (heartbreak, teenage life such as first love and life interests). TRACK LIST

Spine
The spine of a CD Digipak includes the artist’s name, the title of the CD and the record label. These
details will be included on the spine.

Inside (Left)
I have decided to create a thank you message from the artist directed towards the production team as
this is a common audience that a tribute/thank you message is aimed towards. Sometimes it can be a
message to the artist’s fans, however this is the first album from my artist therefore a fan base is most
likely too be only small/not majorly popular. For example, a high trending popular/in the charts artist
such as pop band One Direction would most likely write a thank you message to the fans, as they have a
specific target audience of young girls (9-17 years old on average) and this makes the album more
‘special’ to the fan.
The inside left of a hard copy of a cd digipak is often a
booklet. Conventional digipaks often will include either a
thank you message from the artist, images of the artist,
background information about the artist and the album
itself, and/or the lyrics of the songs on the album.

Eyedropper tool: to select a
light blue colour from
original front cover image
(to keep relevance). A light
colour also allows clear
reading of any text
displayed.
Smudge tool: to smudge
edges of the message to
make it seem a like a
personal letter and get rid
of harsh edges.

Inside (Right)
For the inside right of my digipak, I plan to conform to these conventions, other than the small print about the
record company/label, instead only its name. This is because I want the disc to be simple and visually pleasing. I
have included the typical small print on the back cover of my digipak therefore is not necessary to also include
it on my disc.
In order to make the disc relevant and desirable, I plan to use the same colours and imagery. This will show that
the disc clearly belongs to this particular digipak. I also plan to include the name of title (conforming to
stereotypical discs in a CD Digipak), however also ass the artist's name in a smaller font underneath. This is so
the audience is constantly reminded of the artist and stays in their mind. This is for tactical advertising and
promotional purposes that targets the audience’s sub-conscious and makes the artist memorable through
constant reminder.
The inside right of a CD Digipak conventionally holds the
album disc. The disc usually has the same colour scheme as
the rest of the digipak, the album title and small print about
the record label/company the artist is signed too.
