This paper aims to examine the impacts of a flipped classroom approach
including the benefits and drawbacks. Advancements in technology in
recent years have opened many doors in educational teaching styles. The
flipped classroom approach is among one of the popular teaching
approaches in recent years. Through this approach, instructors are able
to engage students during class time in hopes of improvement in
academic achievement. Typically, students are assigned video lectures
and online assignments which allow active group participation during
learning based activities in class. This paper provides an analysis of the
impacts of a flipped classroom approach and the controversies revolving
around this approach. Benefits that seem to be common among most
the flipped classroom approach are that students have more control in
learning material which allows them to work at their own pace while
having easy accessibility to the material provided online, and that
students and teachers can utilize class time more efficiently. Common
drawbacks notes were that students may not watch instructional videos
and can fall behind, and limited teacher and student interaction.

Introduction
Technology has evolved eminently and has been
a huge advantage for education.
The main purpose of a flipped classroom
approach is to engage students in hopes of
improvement in learning achievement and
critical thinking skills.
In a traditional classroom setting students are
lectured by teachers in class which can take away
time to practice mastering material.
Thesis: Although the flipped classroom approach
is controversial, there are many benefits to the
approach in which students have more control in
learning material at their own pace, lessons are
more accessible, and it is more efficient in
utilizing time while positively affects students
academic students.
Students can consume material at their
own pace.
In a traditional classroom setting, a
student may be forced to slow down the
rest of the class by interrupting to ask for
clarification.
In contrast, in a flipped classroom,
students may go back and replay videos as
many times needed.
If students "continue to have issues, they
are able to come to class prepared to ask
specific questions about concepts"
(Panopto, 2014)
Benefits
Students are able
to follow lectures
at their own pace
In a recent study at University of Florida, a
total of 130 students were evaluated using
a flipped classroom approach and 173
were taught in a traditional classroom
setting. Students were evaluated through
exams, projects, etc.
"there were no differences in exams
scores...students enrolled in a flipped
format of the course scored higher on all 3
exams" (Mortenson & Nicholson, 2015)
Once challenged with difficult material,
students taught in a flipped classroom
setting increased learning achievement
and critical thinking skills.
Benefits
Increase in
learning
achievement and
increase in
student critical
thinking skills
Benefits
In a traditional classroom,
students show what they've
learned through homework.
"in a flipped class, the time that a
teacher once spent delivering
new content can be used
catching and correcting each
students misconceptions" (Sams
& Aglio, 2017)
Bringing homework to class after
watching lecture videos allows for
instructors to adjust what is
taught in class
Students show
mastery of
material under
direct
supervision
Drawbacks
Video lectures are posted online for students to watch
and review at their own pace.
The flipped classroom approach wagers the success of in
class activities if students do not complete the required
work at home.
"some students are not as motivated as others, and this
method of teaching may allow those less motivated
students to get less done" (Krueger, 2014)
Incorporates heavy reliance on student
motivation
Learning material at a different
pace may affect a students
procrastination on learning
material while trying to
understand a concepts for a
following exam.
Drawbacks
Students may find
exams challenging
due to learning
material at a
different pace
This may lead to affecting a
students level of engagement in
class where the student can find
difficulty participating in in-class
activities which is a huge part of a
flipped classroom
Drawbacks
Not all students have access
to the internet or even a
computer.
According to a 2009 survey of
eighteen year old Americans,
only 33 percent have internet
access.
This may affect a students
learning pace due to
students only being able to
access video lectures at
school or during library hours.
Heavy reliance on
technology
Conclusion
There are many challenges faced while trying to
combine online learning and in class learning
simultaneously for the betterment of student
achievement.
If properly enforced, the flipped classroom technique
shows improvement in student performance through
engagement in class activities and discussions.
However, along with benefits come drawbacks.
The best approach is for instructors is to try various
styles to ensure which model is best for students and
themselves because the ultimate goal fo any
institution and instructor is to provide the best
education possible.
