Asthma and Coping with
      its Effects
   Breathing, Life, and Death
       By: Kyle Patterson
Why I Choose This Topic
 My english class of 2012 read Mitch
    Albom’s book Tuesdays with Morrie.
Morrie Swartz’s views on living life and his
belief in the connection between living a
functional life and your ability to breath
    and communicate.
How the Lungs Work
 "The human respiratory system not only
provides oxygen to each cell of the body
but also removes body wastes, filters out
infectious agents, and provides air needed
    for speech”
    (“Medindia”)
Asthma Symptoms
 “Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term)
lung disease that inflames and narrows
    the airways. Asthma causes recurring
periods of wheezing (a whistling sound
    when you breathe), chest tightness,
shortness of breath, and coughing. The
coughing often occurs at night or early in
    the morning.” (“NHLBI”)

Triggers
 Weather
 Animals
 Dust
 Physical activates
 Illness
 Poor air quality
 And many others
Weather Station
 Your local weather station offers
information that can be helpful including:
 Temperature
 Humidity
 High pollen concentration
(Picture from

 )
Active Life
 One can still live an active life with
asthma. With proper preparation and a
plan one can even exercise with asthma.
Cooling down after an exercise is a vital
part of this. If one is careful he or she
can do other physical activities with a low
chance of getting an asthma attack.

 )
Treatment Options
 There is medication to help prevent an
asthma attack, but there is no know cure.
 There are also “rescue” medications that
can help you during and after an asthma
  attack.

This is a picture of an
inhaler. An inhaler is
one form of a “rescue”
medication (Picture

Planning
 Planning is an important part of living with
asthma. It is essential to keep in contact
with ones doctor. He can help form a plan
and will guide one through any questions
  he or she might have.
 There are many options and things to
choose from when making your plans.
Ways to Help
 Even people without asthma can help
    those who do.
    – Avoiding cutting grass on days with a high
      pollen concentration
    – Reducing smog from cars
 Simply being informed is even useful!
Stay Informed
 There are still researchers trying to learn
more about asthma and new things are
  turning up all the time.
 It is a good way to manage ones asthma
  and learn more about it
