Lesson Design for PP Students
Learning Objectives
The most effective way that we can support Pupil Premium students to be successful is by teaching clear, well-organised
and effective lessons. The Learning and Teaching policy is designed to support teachers in designing successful lessons,
which work well not just for PP students but for all.
ISSUES TO CONSIDER
Sometimes, PP students find it harder to understand the point of what they are studying, and are unable to articulate
what they are learning, beyond surface comments about content: ‘we are doing writing, we are learning about the slave
trade’ etc.
Possible Solutions:
PP students may need extra clarity / explicitness in terms of the underlying skills of the subject, beyond the factual
knowledge. It’s therefore important that we know the assessment objectives of the course / subject that we are
delivering, and are able to explain and teach them with precision.
Go back to the syllabus / SOW / AOs for your subject – how clear are you on the skills required for the course?
Can you improve the way that you help the students to understand the underlying skills?
Case Study:
In History at KS3, the underlying skills across all units are:

1.
2.
3.
4.

Causation – Why have things happened in the past?
Evidence – How is historical evidence used to form judgments about the past?
Interpretations – How the past been interpreted by historians and what issues does this present.
Communication – How should we communicate ideas about the past?

To bring attention to these skills, the department colour-code each skill, and use these colours for display,
worksheets, powerpoints etc.
Actions
- go back to the syllabus / SOW that you are delivering, and check that you are absolutely clear about the different skills
that you are each course entails. Reflect on how and when you let the students know what these skills are, and how you
explain them.
