• Do you know if your batteries are still good?
• If the room gets too hot, will your UPS shutdown?
• Are all your power supplies on the same breaker?
• Do I have redundant Power Distribution Units (PDU’s)?

• Network – if one is good, two are better!
• Is the Server Remote Access iLo, DRAC, etc., cabled and configured?
• If I have more than 1 NIC port, do they connected to different blades, stack
members, or switches?
• Are the NIC’s teamed?
• If the switch is stackable, are both stack ports connected?
• Does each switch have at least 2 physical uplinks to the cores, distribution,
router, etc.?

• Network – cont.
• Wherever possible are we using Port-Channels (EtherChannels)?
• Redundancy, Layer 2 vs Layer 3
• Is Spanning Tree mode rapid?
• Where needed, has the Hot Standby Router Protocol been configured on
VLAN interfaces?

Network Design
Simplest Network (Layer 2 Switch)
• If the VLAN interfaces are on the router,
ALWAYS build as a trunk port!
• Are you using media-type auto-failover?
• If this is a stack, do you have redundant
links connected to different stack
members?
• Did you configure a backup interface?
• Declare the backup interface.
• Build the sub-interfaces on the backup
interface

Network Design
Simplest Network (Layer 3 Switch)
• Do you have at least 2 uplinks for the
switch to the router?
• If this is a stack, do you have redundant
links connected to different stack
members?
• Do you have ip multicast multipath
configured?

the switches?
• Are you using diverse carriers?
• Are the carries using diverse paths?

• Other considerations
• If you have a secondary data center, do you know how to bring services
online, or move them from the primary?
• Do you have your clients configured to point to DNS servers, which are
located in the same facility?
• Do you have redundant DHCP servers?
• Are they local to the sites?
• If at the data centers, are they spread across the primary and backup datacenter?
• Are the DHCP servers setup for failover?

David Hedley’s Tech Talks – Redundancy
• Other considerations (cont.)
• If your WAN links are down, do you have the right services onsite to continue
working?
• What things can’t be duplicated?
• Credit Card Processing?
• How much is this outage costing us?
