“Running our data warehouse on DB2 with Linux on IBM
Power Systems has increased IT efficiency, management
productivity and cut costs.”
—Heike Köhler, Head of Data Center Operations, Dirk Rossmann
Background
Dirk Rossmann GmbH is Germany’s second largest drugstore chain. The company
operates approximately 3,250 outlets across Europe, of which almost 2,000 are located
in Germany, where 27,400 staff are employed. Rossmann manages 17,000 products and
generates annual revenues of EUR 7.2 billion, or USD 7.7 billion. The company plans to
open an additional 155 new stores in Germany in 2015.
Business Need
Heike Köhler, head of data center operations at Dirk Rossmann GmbH:
“It was important for us to be able to process and access key sales data efficiently
so that managers could make informed purchasing decisions for an ever larger
number of stores.“
Business Need
• Could not scale
• Migrating systems every year
• Costing time and money.
• Backups over-ran
• Slow down staff during business
hours
• Rapid availability of analytics
needed at all times
Solution
Benefits
• Flashcopy – backups from 15 hours to 5 seconds
• IBM DB2 Compression – reduced data volumes by up to 80%
• Self-Tuning Memory Manager - cut time on manual performance optimization by 50%
• Automated time-based table partitioning – reduced table sizes, process only data
needed, delivering enormously faster responses
• IBM Capacity on Demand – “provides 50 percent faster access to analytics reports and
shorter loading times.”
“Running our business warehouse on DB2 with Linux on IBM Power Systems has
increased IT efficiency, management productivity and cut costs. Rossmann’s managers
now make purchasing decisions based on up-to-date retail figures, ensuring product
ranges match consumer preferences and maximizing sales revenues, enabling the next
phase of the company’s growth.”
Business Result
“Rossmann, a German drugstore chain based in Burgwedel (Lower Saxony), has
generated consolidated sales of €7.2 billion in fiscal 2014, i.e. 8.7% more than in
the previous year. It is the first time that the company has exceeded €7 billion in
sales within one fiscal year.”
RETRAITES POPULAIRES
Adding Webshere Application Server on Linux to IBM i
Retraites Populaires
Gains greater overall functionality while powering up its IT infrastructure
The need:
While running its two disparate Power Systems, Retraites Populaires was
not able to leverage the requisite flexibility and on-demand capacities to
allow for a smooth evolution towards new technologies while keeping the
existing systems running. Moving forward, the company wanted more
functionality and power from its IT infrastructure.
The solution:
Working with IBM®, Retraites Populaires implemented two Power 770
systems running i and Linux – Red Hat, which allowed the company to
have a homogenized Power architecture and gain the needed technology
and capacity to implement its IT strategy. The two systems ensure high
availability, thereby negating performance penalties for the end-users.
The benefits:
 Consolidated the hardware and software investments to lower the
TCO
 Performed smooth evolution of IBM i system architecture to modern
POWER7 architecture
 Increased flexibility with the exploitation of the virtualization
technologies offered by the Power architecture
Solution components:
 IBM® Power Systems 770
 IBM i
 IBM Power Systems running
Linux - Red Hat
Background
Founded over 100 years ago on strong human values and cultivating the spirit of
mutuality, Retraites Populaires is specialized in the areas of life insurance and pension.
Retraites Populaires is a key player in the second and third pillar (part of the Swiss social
insurance system), as in the sectors of real estate lending and institutional fund
management. It serves individuals, businesses and institutions the platform of skills and
know-how they needs. The company was founded in 1907 and is based in Lausanne,
Switzerland.
Business Need
Retraites Populaires was not able to get the needed flexibility and on-demand
capacities to allow for a smooth evolution towards new technologies.
IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment v6.1 in the client's
existing environment, was running on Intel and Power which brings more
complexity to test and deploy on both environments.
POWER5
POWER6
Business Need
An internal study showed that to fulfill it's mission, Retraites Populaires's IT department
had to :
• Homogenize the Power System architecture to new POWER7 systems.
• Increase the flexibility of resource allocation (processors and memories).
• Increase the flexibility of building IBM WebSphere Application Server environments
and in a second step IBM i environments
• Get the ability to test new versions of Operating Systems (IBM System i and Redhat).
• Get the ability to conduct performance tests being independent of application test
environments. (i.e. need more partition and processing power)
• Perform backup and restore tests between the two Power systems (Disaster
Recovery).
Technology had changed a lot since 2005 and 2007 when Retraites Populaires first
installed their POWER5 and POWER6 systems. Their business has grown and they
wanted more functionality and power, it was time to upgrade to the POWER7 System
family.
Benefits
Retraites Populaires gains a wide array of benefits from the new POWER7 system
consolidated architecture :
• Increased flexibility with the exploitation of the virtualization technologies offered by the
Power architecture.
• The ability to adapt the resources dynamically to respond to the workload.
• Consolidating the HW and SW investments to lower the TCO.
• Smooth evolution of IBM i system architecture to POWER7 architecture.
• Increase security responding to the backup and disaster recovery needs.
• Being in line with the trend architecture and technologies of the market.
This was from 2010 – customers have been doing this for years!

Business Need
Italy Economic Growth
September 1, 2015
The combination of low oil prices, a
relatively stable political environment and
stronger economic fundamentals are
expected to drive the country’s first year of
growth since 2011. However, medium-term
prospects for the economy rely heavily on
the successful implementation of much-
needed structural reforms.
FocusEconomics panelists expect the
Italian economy to expand 0.6% this year,
which is unchanged from last month’s
forecast. For 2016, the panel sees
economic growth picking up to 1.2%.

  • 14. Business Need Retraites Populaires was not able to get the needed flexibility and on-demand capacities to allow for a smooth evolution towards new technologies. IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment v6.1 in the client's existing environment, was running on Intel and Power which brings more complexity to test and deploy on both environments. POWER5 POWER6
  • 15. Business Need An internal study showed that to fulfill it's mission, Retraites Populaires's IT department had to : • Homogenize the Power System architecture to new POWER7 systems. • Increase the flexibility of resource allocation (processors and memories). • Increase the flexibility of building IBM WebSphere Application Server environments and in a second step IBM i environments • Get the ability to test new versions of Operating Systems (IBM System i and Redhat). • Get the ability to conduct performance tests being independent of application test environments. (i.e. need more partition and processing power) • Perform backup and restore tests between the two Power systems (Disaster Recovery). Technology had changed a lot since 2005 and 2007 when Retraites Populaires first installed their POWER5 and POWER6 systems. Their business has grown and they wanted more functionality and power, it was time to upgrade to the POWER7 System family.
  • 16. Benefits Retraites Populaires gains a wide array of benefits from the new POWER7 system consolidated architecture : • Increased flexibility with the exploitation of the virtualization technologies offered by the Power architecture.
