XENAPP / XENDESKTOP 7.6
• At their core XenApp servers perform the same function as Microsoft Remote
Desktop Session Host servers, in other words, they host applications and desktops,
which users can connect to. But XenApp is more secure, configurable, faster and
expands upon the functionality offered by Microsoft RDS.
• With the first release within the 7th version, Citrix announced that the XenApp
was at end of life and the function was integrated into XenDesktop 7. Unfortunate
for Citrix the customers didn’t clear understand this message and a lots of
confusion was around this. Citrix responded by re-introducing XenApp back in
version 7.5. So, Citrix brought back the original product name.
INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENTS
• In this presentation I’m going to describe the installation and basic configuration
steps for XenApp / XenDesktop 7.6
• During this Presentation we will explore the components that comprise XenApp
and XenDesktop 7.X
• With the introduction of new product Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop 7.X became
part of the FlexCast Management Architecture, or FMA in short.
• The XenApp move to the FlexCast Management Architecture (FMA) brings
conceptual and terminology shifts.
WHAT'S NEW IN XENAPP 7.X
• XenApp built on FlexCast Management Architecture
• This release of XenApp is built on the FlexCast Management Architecture (FMA)
used in XenDesktop 7.0 This means XenApp provides many features available in
XenDesktop, including:
• Platform support for application delivery, mobility, services, flexible provisioning, and
cloud management.
• The ability to use Citrix HDX technologies to provide a superior user experience on a
variety of devices and networks.
• A single management console (Citrix Studio) to deliver applications and desktops, for
cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
• A redesigned monitoring and troubleshooting console (Citrix Director) with integrated
EdgeSight features.
XENAPP AND XENDESKTOP 7.6 FEATURES
• XenApp published apps (Server-based hosted apps) can be deployed on 5
generations of Windows operating systems—including Windows 10—enabling
secure access to Windows apps on any type of device including iOS, Android, Mac
and Windows devices for on-demand access from anywhere, lets users focus on
work.
• XenApp published desktops are low-cost, locked-down virtual desktops that
provide the flexibility and mobility benefits of desktop virtualization while
maximizing IT control through enhanced security and simplified management.
• VDI desktops offer maximum user personalization of a persistent Windows virtual
desktop that can be fully customized to meet the needs of your most-demanding
users.
XENAPP AND XENDESKTOP 7.6 FEATURES
• VDI with Personal vDisk pairs the maximum user personalization benefits of VDI
with the storage optimizations and administrative efficiencies of single image
management to deliver a desktop virtualization solution that meets the needs of
both users and IT admins.
• Server VDI enables enterprises and service providers the ability to deliver to an
individual user a single session, server-based virtual desktop from the cloud.
• Hosted physical desktops enable high performance remote access to physical
desktops securely protected in the datacenter for optimal data protection,
especially beneficial for graphically intensive applications that run best on a native
OS that has direct access to the physical desktop hardware.
XENAPP AND XENDESKTOP 7.6 FEATURES
• Pre-launch technology creates a local-like app launch experience by expediting
the session creation process. With pre-launch, a session waits for the user in an
active or disconnected state, enabling quick, instant-on app access to an already
active app session making for a fast and local-like app launch experience. Pre-
launch configurations have been improved on the FMA platform, making it simple
to configure from the Citrix Studio management console.
• Session linger keeps the user session open after the user closes the app, to
provide a quick app reconnect or enable the user to open a new app without
repeating the logon process. Admin-configurable time-based policy automatically
releases a license consumed by a pre-launched and lingering session to improve
license management.
UNDERSTANDING THE ARCHITECTURE
XENAPP AND XENDESKTOP 7.6 FEATURES
