The pterygopalatine fossa contains the maxillary nerve, pterygopalatine ganglion, and branches of the maxillary artery. The maxillary nerve enters via the foramen rotundum and gives off branches that innervate structures in the orbit and face. The pterygopalatine ganglion receives preganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the greater petrosal nerve and postganglionic sympathetic fibers from the deep petrosal nerve. Its branches innervate palatal and nasal structures. The maxillary artery supplies the area and follows the branches of the maxillary nerve and ganglion.
