Recently, they provided thermocouple-based data loggers to the USDA Forest Service for a study on soil temperature during forest fires, using a specially designed tube to monitor temperatures at various depths. The study aims to assess the impact of temperature on soil destruction and future growth after fires, with results expected later this summer.

However, everyday customers are finding unique applications for data loggers. Recently, MadgeTech was contacted by the USDA Forest Service from the Rocky Mountain Research Center located at the University of Idaho. They were in search of a thermocouple based data logger that could be used to monitor the temperature of soil during forest fires. MadgeTech's TC101A's fit the bill and the loggers were recently shipped to Idaho to be used in the experiment to determine temperature's impact on destruction and future growth. On average, over 7 million acres of land are burned each year by forest fires, which can provide benefits such as reducing brush, but is also very dangerous and can threaten homes and the lives of people and animals. In order to record the temperatures at varying depths, a system was created featuring a long tube to be buried with the data loggers inside. Holes run along the length of the tube for the thermocouples to protrude to accurately measure soil temperature at different levels. The study will be conducted later this summer.
