Chapter 1 Section 1.1
By: Mariam Habib Computers.....
Computers are counting machines just like calculators. They are used for processing data. Data means facts and figures. Computers are used in many different places like at offices, banks, hospitals, factories, schools and at home. What are computers????
The way a computer functions is very similar to the way you solve a problem using pen and paper. The first operation, input, involves obtaining data. The second operation, processing, involves manipulation of the data. The third operation output, involves sending the results of the processing the information to the users. The fourth operation, storage, involves keeping the data in an electronic store. How does a computer process data???
Block diagram of a computer PROCESSOR INPUT OUTPUT STORAGE
Computers are data processing machines. In a fraction of a second they can do millions of calculations that would take a person with pen and paper weeks and months to do. Computers are capable of storing data, instructions and information for later use. Data processing machines
An example of processing NAME AGE MIKE 12 PETER 13 AHMAD 11 JANE 13 JEAN 12 PETER 12 AVERAGE AGE: 12.1 YEARS PROCESSOR 12+13+11+13+12+12 = 73 73/6 = 12.1 SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A LIST OF AGES OF YOUR CLASSMATES AND YOU WANT TO FIND THEIR AVERAGE AGE. THE INPUT DATA WILL BE THE LIST OF AGES. THE COMPUTER WILLADD ALL THE AGES UP, THEN IT WILL DIVIDE THE SUM BY THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS. THE AVERAGE AGE IS THE OUTPUT CALCULATED BY THE COMPUTER.
Computers are capable of processing data even when it is not in the form of text and numbers. Computers are used to control traffic lights, airplanes, and ships. Computerized security systems can protect houses and buildings from intruders. Computers can also be used for playing music and games. Computers are machines just like cars, washing machines, … They cannot think for themselves. They can only follow instructions. They do not have feelings or emotions unlike human beings.. What can computers do???
Did you know????????? It is estimated that there are about 350 million computers in the world. This gives a ratio of 1 computer to every 15 people.. A decade ago, there was 1 computer to every 800 people. Fifty years ago, computers did not even exist.
A computer : An automatic machine. It processes data quickly and accurately. Has a storage capacity for storing data and instructions. It can recall any stored information when needed. It cannot think on its own but follow instructions. It has no feelings or emotions unlike human beings Review
