CENSUS
• The Indian Census is the largest single
source of various statistical information on
various characteristics of the peopulation
of the country.
• In 2011, India conducted its 15th national
census
History
• With a history of more than 130 years, this
reliable, began in 1872 under British
Viceroy Lord Mayo, the first complete census
was taken in 1881
Frequency
• Census is done every 10 years
Last Census
• The last census was held in 2011, whilst the
next was to be held in 2021. But it has been
postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in
India.
Governing and Conducting
Body
• The responsibility of conducting the
decadal census rests with the Office of the
Registrar General and Census
Commissioner of India, Ministry of Home
Affairs, Government of India.
Census Act
• The Census Act was enacted in the year
1948 to provide a plan for conducting
population census along with the duties and
responsibilities of census officers.
• The Government of India decided in May
1949 to take steps to develop a systematic
collection of data on population size, its
growth, etc. and set up an organization in the
Ministry of Home Affairs under the Registrar
General of India and ex-officio Census

Phases of Census
• The Census Operations in India have been carried
out in two phases: -
i) House listing and Housing Census and
ii) Population Enumeration.
House listing and Housing Census
• During House listing and Housing Census, all
buildings, Census Houses and Households are
identified and systematically listed in the relevant
schedules.
• It provides comprehensive data on the conditions of
human settlements, housing deficit and consequently
the housing requirements to be taken care of in the
formulation of housing policies.
Population Enumeration
• The Population Enumeration follows the
Housing Census within a gap of six to eight
months.
• During the second phase of census taking, each
person is enumerated and her/his individual
particulars are collected such as-
i. Age,
ii. Marital status,
iii. Religion, Schedule Cast/Schedule Tribe,
iv. Mother tongue,
v. Education level,
vi. Disability,
vii. Economic activity,
viii. Migration,
ix. Fertility (for female)
Population Census 2011
• The national census survey covered all the
28 states of the country and 7 Union
territories including 640 districts, 497
cities, 5767 tehsils & over 6 lakh villages.
• Census data was collected in 16
languages and the training manual was
prepared in 18 languages.
MOTTO
• The motto of the 2011 census was 'Our
Census, Our future'.
Duration of Census-2011
• The 2011 Census officially began on 1
April 2010 with Phase 1 i.e. House listing
and Housing Census.
• Phase 1 took 6 months and ended in
September 2010.
• Phase 2 of the Census was conducted
from 9 February to 28 February 2011.
REVISION PHASE
• The Census underwent Phase 3 from 1
March to 5 March 2011. Called the
Revision Round, Phase 3 accounted for
any births, deaths, or migration that
occurred up to 00:00 1 March 2011.
Data Collectors
• To collect information on 1.2 billion people in just
20 days, the government called on government
employees to participate as enumerators.
• Teachers were the main source of enumerators,
but anganwadi workers and employees from other
government departments were also assigned
census duty.

• As a result, some schools were closed during the
Census

• The Sex Ratio in the country has shown
an improvement.
• As per the Census, sex ratio has
increased from 933 females per thousand
males in 2001 to 943 females per
thousand males in 2011.21-Aug-2013
Growth Rate
• According to the provisional reports
released on 31 March 2011, the Indian
population increased to 1.21 billion with a
decadal growth of 17.70%.
SES Data
• There are 24.49 crore (243.9 million)
households in India, of which 17.97 (179.7
million) crore live in villages.
• Of these, 10.74 crore households are
considered as deprived.
• 5.37 crore (29.97%) households in rural
areas are "landless deriving a major part
of their income from manual labour.
Some interesting facts of 2011
census
• Thane district of Maharashtra is the most
populated district of India.
• Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh is the least
populated.
• Kurung Kumey of Arunachal Pradesh registered
highest population growthrate of 111.01 percent.
• Longleng district of Nagaland registered
negative population growth rate of (-)58.39.
• Mahe district of Puducherry has highest sex
ratio of 1176 females per 1000 males.
• Daman district has lowest sex ratio of 533
females per 1000 males.
• Serchhip district of Mizoram has highest
literacy rate of 98.76 percent.
• Alirajpur of MP is the least literate district of
India with figure of 37.22 percent only.
