Assignment title 1.2 Preparing for and carrying out an engineering activity
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Be able to apply statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
Scenario
The ability to work safely in an engineering environment is essential for the well-being of you
and others. You are asked to prepare for and carry out two engineering activities from a given
list. Preparation will entail carrying out a risk assessment of the selected work area or activity,
identifying all safety procedures and any personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
You are required to complete the documentation and report your findings with any suggested
improvements.
Task 1
Prepare for and carry out one of the following engineering activities.
Identify PPE requirements and describe the safety procedures that must be observed when carrying
out the selected engineering activities.
(a) Manufacture a simple cast handled screwdriver
(b) Drill holes in mild steel using a pedestal drill
(c) Grind a point on a centre punch
(d) Produce a welded joint
(e) Use the lathe
(f) Manual handling operation
(g) Remove and refit an electrical or mechanical component.
This provides evidence for P5
Task 2
Complete a risk assessment based on the Centre lathe in the workshop (prior to using the
machine to face off the screwdriver handle).
You may use the template design, which has been given to you.
It should clearly state the following information.
 Your name and date of the risk assessment
 A description of the activity – How to use materials safely and handle equipment
appropriately
 The hazards involved
 A hazard rating based on
(i) the likelihood of a hazard occurring
(ii) the severity of potential injury
(iii) the identification of the risk factor
This provides evidence for M1
Task 3
Once you have manufactured your chosen engineering activity submit a report using the template
provided to include:
• description of activity
• PPE requirements
• safety procedures
• identification of what went well/wrong during the activity
• suggested improvements.
This provides evidence for M3
