Evaluation Question 2
• To achieve the first aim of attracting an audience I used a striking
and controversial central image for my film poster to grab the
reader’s attention. An image of a man tied and gagged is
abnormal meaning it is bound to turn heads and is rather
unforgettable therefore should leave a lasting impression in the Director’s other work
reader’s mind. The image is also rather enigmatic, leaving the
reader wondering who the man is and just why he is tied up and
gagged, enticing them to watch the film in order to discover these Slogan
    answers. Black
                                                                                background
• I followed the poster conventions that I have learnt through my
studies and included a simple and catchy slogan on my poster
with would hopefully remain in the reader’s mind. Much like the
central image, the slogan is enigmatic, shrouding the film in Subtle use
further mysteries through the use of the exophoric reference Striking central of red
‘they’, leaving the reader questioning what ‘they’ are – persuading image
them further to see the film. I also included the names of the lead
cast members – a common technique which can be used to
attract viewers because bringing the film’s stars to their attention
may draw them in, particularly if they happen to be a big fan of
any of the actors. But perhaps the most significant text on the
poster is the very top line alerting the reader of the director of the Cast names
film’s other work. This is a perfect plugging device as it is sure to Billing block
convince any reader to see the film who has previously seen and
enjoyed some of the director’s other in the believe that they will
enjoy his latest work all the same.
                                                                              Website address
• To conclude and produce a more polished and professional finish, Film title
I added an age restriction certificate - to establish that the film has
been licensed and certified by the BBFC - and the official
‘Independent Film Festival’ logo to my poster to signify legitimacy
and acknowledge that the film has been given the seal of approval Film festival logo
                                                                                                                              Age certificate
by critics. This feature should help to attract strong viewing Release date
figures, particularly amongst avid cinema goers and perhaps the
art house crowd who may specifically seek films with such
approval. With all this in check, I believe I have completed a
successful job in the attempt to attract audiences to see our short
    film.
• I used a large number of images in my double-page spread in order to support the text and provide the page with a more attractive
and exciting appearance that should hopefully catch a reader’s eye that may happen to be flicking through the magazine. These
images were all still shots taken directly from our short film. I deliberately selected the most iconic and exciting moments of the plot
to include which were likely to grab the reader’s interest. The images were also slightly ambiguous and enigmatic leaving the
reader wondering more about the plot of the film, enticing them to watch it, such as the largest image – a shot of the ex-girlfriends
collage of photos. With no contextual knowledge of the film’s plot this would mean nothing to the reader, though is an intriguing and
striking image which may persuade them to discover more.

• In order to attract more viewers and promote, I wrote a positive review of the film from the perspective of a critic which would help to
build a positive reputation, bound to attract audiences. I contained heavy use of positive adjectives, conventional of the review
examples I have studied, to reinforce the film’s high quality such as ‘sensational’ and ‘breath-taking’. I also made reference to other
popular films of similar style such as Paranormal Activity, another very common convention I found in film reviews, which can be
used to gain the film fans.

• To provide the spread with a more professional finish I included the official logo for Total Film in the top left hand corner (the
conventional position) – an extremely popular and trustworthy film publication. Featuring a positive film review in such a highly
recognised and popular film magazine is sure to gain the film mass audiences.

                                                                                                         Star rating

Positive review Images from the film

                                                                                                           Page number
• The largest use of colour on my film poster is black which is
immediately cohesive to the film’s tone and genre; a dark and
sinister horror/thriller. The eerily pale image of the male
                                                                            Black
character – an almost ghostly white glow, also strengthens the background
horror/thriller connotations as well as introducing elements of
the film’s supernatural genre. The subtle use of the colour red is
used in order to alert the reader’s attention to the danger of the Subtle use
film, a message which is particularly symbolic matched with the of red to highlight
word’s in red ‘haunt’ and ‘tragedy’, both having very negative danger words
connotations reinforcing the film’s horror/thriller genre.

• I also used black and white images in the double-page spread,
staying true to the sinister genre of the film. Within the review, I
ensured that I made references to other established horror and Ghostly white
thriller such as Insidious and Paranormal Activity films in order image
to create the idea that our film was a part of this collection
reinstating and building a stronger sense of its genre.
• All of the images I have used throughout my ancillary tasks have had a black and white filter just as the film to
honour its film noir influences and to remain cohesive. The little use of red on the poster remains cohesive of the
red filter used throughout certain scenes of the film. I have used the exact same film logo in both pieces I have
produced as the one used in the opening titles of the film to provide a sense of authenticity and to strengthen the
fact they are all parts of the same promotional package. To further enforce the cohesion between the pieces I used
still images taken directly from the film in my double-page spread and for the poster I used a special promotional
image which was directly inspired by the most iconic scene in the film.

                                              Official film logo
