Sound
• When I was editing my film I was using good quality surround sound headphones. This
not only allowed me to tweak sound very precisely but I could get rid of any subtle
sound I did not want. However this feedback session revealed that when played
through a pair of standard headphones the sound becomes rougher and less precise.
The issue of muffled unclear sound became apparent and despite this not being a
problem when headphone are used I needed to adapt my film so it can be played on a
variety of platforms comfortably.
• Another element of sound, the narration was also brought up. As the previous edit had
no sound at all this new element aided the narration dramatically but as it was now one
of the most dominant features of the film it picked up my audiences attention. One
comment mentioned how the narration seemed to be set at the same level as the
ambiance and of course I had done this.
• Another area mentioned was the juxtaposition between the chaotic opening and the
calm establishing shot. One member of the focus group did not think it worked however
other members thought it was effective. From this I learnt that some features of my
film were up for dispute and therefore I had to make a final decision on whatever is
contested.
Flashbacks
• Due to the length limitations of my short film I realised that
flashbacks would be a viable option to add to my narrative with.
When I showed my film primarily the narrative was unclear and
therefore this feedback session was critical.
• Overall the comments made about the additions were positive. The
amount and time spent during the past was acceptable. However a
few potential problems arose. One person commented on the way I
created the flashbacks. A question surfaced, commenting on if the
flashbacks were meant to be still images or was I trying to recreate
film? When shooting the pictures I planned to have a collage of
memories overlapping over each other and this was followed
through when I processed the images. In some ways this comment
was irrelevant however it did help me understand how some would
see my film critically.
Idents
• To ensure my product replicates the real equivalent I made a reel of
idents crediting various studios to be placed before my film starts.
From the feedback session I realised that idents, despite only
essentially being adverts for those involved in production, also give
consumers an impression of what is to come and therefore are of
high importance.
• One of the main issues which arose was the style of the idents.
Apart from the first, I used pre-generated effects to create the
animations and this was picked up upon during the focus group.
Despite them being of sound quality, I was told they look to
uniformed and default. As this was something that ruined the
quality of the ident I decided to modify them by applying a variety
of visual effects, such as increasing contrast and altering colours.
