   1. Classification is the arrangement of organisms into orderly groups based on their

       characteristics

   2. Why do we classify things?

          • To arrange in orderly groups

          • So scientists can communicate with one another

          • To show relationships

   3. The seven levels of classification are:

       Kingdom
                         Phylum

                                Class

                                        Order

                                                Family

                                                         Genus

                                                                 Species

   4. Create a mnemonic device to remember the order of the levels.

       King Phillip Came

       Over From Germany

       Saturday

   5. Each class is divided into one or more orders.
6. Linnaeus founded taxonomy the science of identifying, classifying, and naming living

   things.

7. Grouped organisms start to form a line of descent.

8. Species with a recent common ancestor can be classified together.

9. Looking at figure 4, which animal is farthest from being related to a cat? Platapus

10. Scientific names are written in what two languages? Latin and Greek.

11. What does Tyrannosaurus Rex mean? Tyrant lizard

12. Why are scientific names so important?
