they like it. This did
have a free CD however
I took it.
This contents page has a definite
function. It is to get the reader to
read the lead article. That is why the
lead article is larger than ‘Upbeat’
and features combined.
The page actually changes from
pictorial above to textual below. This
makes it busier than the front cover,
however not so busy that it would
disrupt house style.
This also makes it easier to read as
the clarity and calm ora is not
disrupted. It is easy to see where to
find what you want to find as the
page is easy to navigate because of
all the white space.
As in the front cover of Kerrang the
lead image has been brought
forward over the middle ground
image, done to bring attention to
the lead article.
It is a very pictorial page as the
space needed for the images
almost drowns out all the other
articles.
On this page there is also a
small, almost merchandise advert
for a subscription as well as an
editors note.
However it is easy to read and
does not conform to the house
style shown on the front cover.
Unless it is a double bluff…
This is the contents page for Uncut.
This page continues the old theme.
As you can see this page is mainly
pictorial and the main form of being
a contents page seems to have been
forgotten.
The clarity of the page is fine when
it comes to the lead image however
all of the other articles seem to have
been forgotten and pushed in at the
last moment.
Despite all that however there is an
appeal to men. Instead of writing
‘Come on’ the editor has written
‘Cum on’, which is a sexual
connotation.

look a bit more up to date. Another good point consistent with the house style. The
is that they have ‘Upbeat’ in the top right, spacing of the head line and strap line
which is part of the contents which makes it both show gentleness and easiness as
easier to find. The columns of bodycopy the are centred in the space that they
change with the use of the picture but still has have. That smooth orange also adds a
good guttering. certain calm feel.
The amount of images used here is small. The
man with the piano is portrayed to be a
dreamer as he is there in dim light
concentrating only on the piano. The dim light
indicates that there is only him around and the
concentration focusses on him playing the
keys in the right order. The other picture of
Lizst is there to show that he was just an
ordinary person, not a “diva”.
Main feature analysis
This is the double page spread for Kerrang!.
The headline for this piece is really very
difficult to miss. In fact it is extremely
prominent. The font used for the head line is
almost exactly the same as the font for the
masthead. The colour keeps with the house
style as it is very brash and obvious. The
yellow and the white works well together
with just enough contrast to keep within the
house style. The differentiating sizes also add
a certain madness about them. The strapline
however does not have that madness about
it.
The pull quote also adds the madness as the
choice of words does not exactly encourage
anything nice. It of course reiterates what one
of the band members says about their new
album.
Main feature analysis
This is the double page spread for Uncut. I
scanned it on almost two different scales,
sorry about that. The layout for this magazine
is different to any of the other magazines I
have analysed. It may be very pictorial like the
others but the style of the people in the
image differs. These three people have
clothing that would not look out of place in a
60’s-80’s American inner-city black
neighbourhood. One of them also has hair to
match. This can tell the reader a lot about this
article and the music that these people have
made. It says that this music is telling the
world about their everyday hardship and
torment.
The font used for the headline and drop cap
reiterates that. It screams that even though
laws have been passed white people around
their neighbourhood still use those offensive
words.
The green layer above also helps for this as it
washes out and demoralises the colour that it
has. It shields all that they stand for.
