Science Education 2011 Course Themes: An integrated approach: lectures   readings  workshops   assignments science at school + science in the community preparation for teaching: modelling practice an inquiry-based approach
Course overview Lectures x7 course and assignments prior knowledge and teaching approaches planning a unit of work guest speakers Workshops x10 x 3 hours   teaching approaches, resources, managing the learning the environment x 10 hours per week, per course is expected
Assignments Power point presentation   students’ prior knowledge   (due week 4 ) 2. Unit planner planning for learning  (week 8**)
Towards an AustralianCurriculum’  (from draft, 09) “ To achieve the stated aims of the Australian science curriculum it is proposed that there needs to be  less emphasis on a transmission model of pedagogy  and  more emphasis on a model of student engagement and inquiry .  The driving force of the transmission model is teacher explanation whereas the learning engine for inquiry is based on teacher questions and discussion.  Teacher explanation is still important but it should be seen as one skill in a broad repertoire of teaching skills.”
The Australian Curriculum   (in draft only, 2010) 3 Inter-related Content Strands: science   understanding  (facts, concepts, principles, laws,  theories, models) science   inquiry skills  (investigations, evidence) science   as   a human endeavour  (decision making, social  and ethical issues,  cultural perspectives, historical and future aspects )
